About:
Studio Echelman is offering a paid 2-year fellowship in our Boston-based integrated design practice, which designs and builds installations at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, public art, and urban transformation.
Led by artist Janet Echelman, the design team focuses on the development and creation of large-scale artworks, both permanent and temporary. These living, breathing sculpture environments respond to the forces of nature - wind, water and light - and have become inviting focal points for civic life on five continents. This is a mission-driven studio, and a belief in and value for the power of art and design to transform public life is essential.
Team member will be immersed in a busy studio, working to solve real design problems and find collaborative solutions for large-scale projects. Candidates must have strong conceptual and design skills with 3D modeling ability and be fully capable of project management. Experience with textiles is a plus.
The position is open to all individuals who have completed a degree in architecture, art, engineering, or related design field degree program. Applicants should have a strong background in design and fabrication and be comfortable with python, C#, and/or computational design tools.
Responsibilities:
· Engage in the creative/design process of major public art projects.
· Design sculptural forms, fabrication files, and construction documents using Grasshopper, Rhino, Python, and CAD tools.
· Collaborate with leading international teams of engineers, architects, and landscape architects to develop designs.
· Write material related to design concepts.
· Prepare design proposals, presentations, and renderings according to timelines.
· Develop and oversee timeline for concept generation, design development, fabrication, and execution of major urban projects.
Eligibility:
· Bachelor's degree required. Graduate degree preferred.
· Background in architecture, sculpture, design, and/or engineering.
· Experience with computational design and fabrication.
· Comfortable with math and programming to solve design problems and produce material descriptions. Comfortable working with spreadsheets to store and transform numerical data.
· 3D modeling software: Grasshopper, Rhino are required. JSON, Autodesk, Python, C#, CAM software, Sketchup are desired.
· Proficient in Adobe programs: Photoshop is required. Illustrator, InDesign are desired.
· Communication skills in verbal and written form.
