Job Summary

Summer Teaching Assistant (TA) positions for courses offered to high school students as part of Ithaca College’s Summer Pre-College Programs. TAs for these classes are required to be physically present on campus during class times, which occur on weekdays from roughly 9am – 6pm (although specifics will depend on the program and faculty member). TAs may also be required to assist outside of class time to complete other duties as needed. The Summer Pre-College Programs courses will run from Monday, July 13th – Friday, July 31st. TAs are expected to be available starting around July 6th to prepare for the role (i.e., meet with their faculty member or program director) and assist their faculty as needed.

Duties and responsibilities

Teaching Assistants perform many leadership, organizational, and classroom management tasks to support both faculty and program participants. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Helping faculty with lesson preparation, including arranging the classroom, collecting or distributing materials, setting up equipment, and any other support needs as requested by faculty
  • Leading discussion groups, providing oversight for projects, or reviewing lessons with participants on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
  • Giving extra help to participants who need special accommodation or are struggling
  • Tracking attendance and assisting faculty with grading assignments
  • Collaborating with faculty regarding participants’ concerns or behavioral issues and recommending solutions
  • Reinforcing course rules and regulations with participants
  • Serving as a role model for participants both personally and professionally, including modeling behaviors that are consistent with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Assisting with the movement of participants from one campus location to the next
  • Other duties as necessary or assigned

    Qualifications

Candidates should express genuine interest in working with a diverse group of students in a learning environment and have a basic understanding of human, social, and educational development. Candidates with prior experience as a teaching assistant or working with youth in a camp environment, a history of providing leadership to a variety of age groups, and the ability to foster the development of a community through a variety of methods are preferred. Preference will be given to current Ithaca College students whose education and experience align with the TA role for which they are applying.

All TAs must consent to and be able to pass a federal and state criminal history and sex offender background check by the college, comply with the Minor Protection Policy, attend a health and safety meeting, and be able to practice and adhere to the methods and guidelines as stated in the Ithaca College Safety and Medical Plan.

    Compensation

This position is compensated at an hourly rate of $16 per hour. TAs selected for these programs will work approximately 25-30 hours per week. Applicants in this position will be required to submit timecards as part of the pay process.

Room and board are not provided for this position. On-campus housing and meal plans are available through the Office of Residential Life and Campus Dining, respectively.
