Position: ESY American Sign Language Interpreter
Reports to: Director of Student Programs
Supervises: None
Qualifications:
- Satisfy the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter for the Deaf Act requirements by:
- Demonstrating the interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaboratively with staff and students within the instructional setting,
- Have a comprehensive general knowledge of academic subjects and current events, educational processes and organization, principles and practices of special education, and aspects and issues of deaf culture, AND
- Meet one or more of the following:
- Completed an interpreter training program, OR
- Obtained a Bachelor's degree, OR
- Worked three (3) or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education, which could include interpreting in non-educational settings such as a church, etc., AND
- Attained at least one of the following:
- Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level IV Certification or better.
- Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III or better.
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better in the area for which they are certified (elementary or secondary).
- Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (ESSE) Level 3.5 or better.
- Maintain current eligibility and registration on the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter Registry.
- Satisfy all district requirements with regard to physical health and citizenship.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
Position Goal: Assist the ESY program in meeting the specific goals and objectives for student(s) with a hearing impairment, through the provision of individual attention, communication via sign language, additional and/or enrichment instruction.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Interpret all instruction/information using sign language to the student.
- Communicate to the staff the questions/concerns of students.
- Assist the teacher with instruction and/or activities for individuals or groups.
- Assist with meeting the physical and training needs of the student(s).
- Modify materials and maintain room for instruction of student(s) with hearing impairment.
- Accompany student(s) with hearing impairment to and from school activities.
- Maintain student records, i.e., confidentiality, adhere to school schedules, etc.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment: June 1, 2026 - June 25, 2026 (16 days during this timeframe)
Compensation: Current JPS hourly rate of pay
