Position Summary

This position will be a critical part of restoration activities in West Hawai'i parks. Placement will be part of the Resources Management (RM) team and participate in a range of natural and cultural management activities. The primary focus of this position is supporting restoration of native plants throughout the park by growing plants in a new shade house. Placements will work independently and as part of a team to collect, grow and outplant native Hawaiian plants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Placement will help plan, organize, and set up a new shade house operation at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, work cooperatively with other West Hawai'i National Parks, and create a system for tracking source material for collection and propagation of native plants from the region. Placement will work closely with park staff to plan and grow plant materials for restoration and rehabilitation projects. Other duties include seed and propagule collection. Placement will occasionally work on other projects as assigned.

Marginal Duties

As part of the Resource Management team, placements will participate in all aspects of park RM work, including, masonry, weed control, visitor interaction, volunteer activities, and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Familiarity, or ability to learn, native Hawaiian plants, familiarity with horticultural techniques, ability to work in hot, sometimes remote conditions, and work with a diverse team.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority. Participants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent or agree to obtain one or be enrolled in an institution of higher education.

Compensation

Living allowance - $600/week;

Housing allowance - $800.month;

Up to $2000 to spend on duty related travel and expenses with supervisor approval and receipts

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
