Position Summary 

Anchialine pools are unique ecosystems found in abundance at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park. These pools are threatened by invasive species, such as non-native vegetation, which threaten the function and species found in these pools. This project will advance inventory work done in the last several years through the development of a management plan, prioritizing the nearly 300 pools documented to date, identifying management needs, and implementing management in the pools. This work will protect pools identified as priorities and involve hands-on actions to remove invasive species, particularly invasive plant.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

This position will be responsible for writing up a management plan for the pools, with support from Park staff (40%).

· Develop a comprehensive management plan prioritizing pools based on previous data collected at anchialine pools

· Develop deeper understanding of long-term ecosystem management and its application in culturally and ecologically significant environments

· Collaborate with other federal, state, or local agencies to develop management plan


Work in the field with Park staff to document, clear, and monitor pools (approximately 60% time)

· Assist in the identification and removal of invasive plant species in and around anchialine pool ecosystems, with a focus on minimizing impact on native vegetation and cultural resources

· Develop skills in distinguishing native and non-native species and understanding their roles and effects on aquatic ecosystems

· Build foundational skills in ecological restoration through hands-on vegetation removal and plant monitoring

 

Marginal Duties 

Incumbent may be asked to assist with permitting associated with this and future work in and around ponds.

 

Required Qualifications 

Degree in Biological Sciences and familiarity with anchialine pools. Valid driver’s license. Ability to work independently, as well as with a team. Ability to follow instructions, communicate effectively, and adhere to safety protocols.


This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Familiarity with Hawaiian culture, knowledge of local area.

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Housing is not provided

 

Compensation  

$600/week-living allowance (paid bi-weekly)

$800/month housing allowance (paid monthly)

$2,000 - duty-related reimbursements (used for required gear, PPE, travel, training/conferences, commuting costs)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
