Service Position Summary 

The SCA member will assist in performing simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. The will also assist with higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.

 

  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches and catches.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.
  • Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collects trash.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers.
  • Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

Essential Functions 

Work is simple and routine and performed according to prescribed plans or specific directions including detailed methods and tools. Repair work is limited to replacement in kind involving simple measures and clear examples of finished work. A moderate degree of precision, accuracy or appearances is required.

Receives detailed instructions for all new assignments, and unusual problems are referred to the supervisor or a higher graded employee. On project work, incumbent works closely with higher graded employees while assisting them. Works under close supervision or direction while assisting with project work

 

Marginal Functions

Assist park staff with general operations and visitor activities as needed; Support park-led events, programs, or maintenance tasks when requested; Provide occasional assistance with park fuels management or related resource projects.

Adults 18 or older

  

Required Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of simple and common trade practices.
  • Ability to make simple measurements using tape measure and square.
  • Ability to use simple hand tools such as hammer, saw, brush and roller, screwdriver, wrench, electric drill/saw and other power tools in a safe and acceptable manner.
  • Ability to operate light vehicles and equipment such as pick-up truck and fork lift.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

$600/wk living stipend

Relocation cost support as needed, up to $650

General Physical Requirements

·      Able to understand, adhere to, and communicate with others regarding hazards, procedures, and safety policies. 

·      Able to stay alert and engaged for extended periods of program time. 

·      Able to wear all required personal protective equipment, including internal or external, safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, N95 or other approved face mask or shield, chaps, and appropriate footwear.  

·      Able to refrain from behaviors and actions that disrupt the work and safety of others. 

·      Able to cooperate with others to complete daily group tasks, responsibilities, and project work under potentially difficult conditions, variable daily routines, and with limited personal time. 

·      Able to self-regulate or co-regulate emotions and actions when distressed or uncomfortable, with or without the support of others. 

·      Able to self-manage outdoor and environmental exposure (e.g., temperature, wind, sun, etc.) in a variety of weather conditions. 

·      If using prescription medications, able to self-medicate by following the prescribed dosage, usage, and timing without supervisor assistance (except possibly at the direction of higher medical authority in emergency situations).

·      Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

·      Frequently lifts, carries and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to

40 pounds.

 

Working Conditions

Work settings may involve exposure to natural and environmental hazards, such as poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac; harmful, poisonous, or disease-carrying ticks, mosquitos, insects, snakes, bears, and other wildlife.; Work may take place in cold temperatures and adverse winter weather which could include temperatures in some regions -20°F or colder with wind, snow, and sleet.; Work may take place in warm temperatures and adverse heat conditions which could include temperatures in some regions up to 110°F or hotter.; Work environment may be in inclement and severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flash flooding, gusty and strong winds, foggy or decreased visibility, lightning events, and/or decreased or inclement air quality conditions due to wildfire smoke or smog.; Work settings may be located in natural environments and regionally significant locations that require respect for the land and local peoples.; Work settings require the ability to positively interact with people of varying perspectives.; Work schedules and projects may change on short notice or be ambiguous.
