Position Summary 

This dual position helps the individual gain a variety of experience in the conversation field while also helping accomplish the main goals of the Refuge. The individual will be spending about half their time working on habitat restoration through invasive species control, and the other half of their time helping with our environmental education program, which works with local school children.

'May 4, 2026 - November 6, 2026

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Control invasive plant species through hand-pulling, lopping, weed whacking, and herbicide application

  • Assist with fieldwork, including habitat improvement projects such as invasive species assessment and treatment, as well as other biological duties

  • Support school field trips by teaching lessons, managing students, and assisting with setup and cleanup

  • Assist the Refuge Park Ranger with the Partner School Program

  • Help prepare and deliver high-quality environmental education programs in local schools

  • Support staff with special events, including Kids Fishing Day and Science Camp

 

Marginal Duties 

Asist with trail and overall refuge maintenance. Learn and deliver interpretive programs. Research and design your own programs. Work with partner organizations on special invasives excursions, that may include trips to the Apostle Islands, Coastal Lake Superior marshes, St. Louis River Estuary and white-water canoeing on the Brule River.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • A four-year undergraduate degree in a related field or one year of combined work experience with a natural resource agency or conservation organization (e.g., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, State Parks, or a similar relevant organization)

  • A valid state driver’s license

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Experience working with herbicides

• Experience using hand-tools, mowers, and weed whackers

• Experience working with kids

• Training in outdoor education curriculum like PLT, project wet etc.

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Accommodations will be the responsibility of the member; however, staff will be available to help make contacts with local landlords, help post on housing socials, and assist with virtual tours of rentals.

 

Compensation  

Weekly living allowance: $720/week; Relocation allowance: $1,100, paid once

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
