What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cummins Certified Diesel Technician position at STS Truck & Utility Trailer Sales of New York?
About Us
STS Truck & Utility Trailer Sales of New York was founded in 1949 and is family-owned and operated, with full sales, service, and parts facilities across Upstate New York and Central Pennsylvania. We carry a complete line of tractor-trailers, heavy- and light-duty truck equipment, Kalmar Ottawa yard trucks, and a deep parts inventory. Our Syracuse location is an authorized Cummins service location and our Kalmar Ottawa service hub. We are looking to expand our Cummins-certified diesel technician base to support our recurring customers.
Position Overview
You'll diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and their supporting systems — principally the Cummins B6.7 and QSB6.7 platforms that power our Kalmar Ottawa yard trucks.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair Cummins B6.7 and QSB6.7 engines: internal and external components, fuel systems, air and cooling systems, electronic controls, and aftertreatment
- Troubleshoot with factory diagnostic software; perform ECM calibrations, sensor and wiring harness diagnosis, and drivability work
- Perform Cummins warranty repairs to Cummins standards using genuine Cummins parts, with complete supporting documentation
- Complete engine installation, commissioning, and start-up work
- Perform scheduled engine preventive maintenance and identify developing failures before they become downtime
- Document work order details accurately and completely in our work order system — engine model and serial number, fault codes, parts used, and time on the job
- Maintain your Cummins certification current, including completing required instructor-led and online training
- Work independently and complete jobs within quoted time
- Follow all policies and safety rules, and help keep a clean, safe shop
Required Qualifications
- Current Cummins certification at Repair level or above, with training records verifiable through Cummins. Full Service certification preferred. This is a certification-dependent position and we cannot consider candidates without it.
- Certification covering Cummins B6.7 and/or QSB6.7 mid-range platforms, or the demonstrated engine experience to complete the additional product training required for them
- Demonstrated diagnostic and troubleshooting competency on diesel engines — able to work from symptom and fault code to root cause without hand-holding
- Working fluency with Cummins factory diagnostic software and electronic engine controls
- Valid NYS driver's license with a clean driving record and insurability under our policy
- Own hand tools (we provide a boot and tool allowance)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and to stand, bend, climb, kneel, crouch, and work on your feet in a shop environment year-round
- Ability to visually inspect small defects and small parts, and to hear and accurately interpret mechanical and technical information in an environment with noise and vibration
- Basic computer skills and the discipline to document work accurately — warranty reimbursement depends on it
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, management, and customers
