What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Controller position at Structural Components Fabrication?
Controller (Future CFO Track)
Finance & Accounting | Multi-Company Role
Reports To: Owner
About the Role (Read This First)
We’re looking for a Controller who loves clean books, strong systems, and real accountability — but also enjoys working with people who take the work seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
This role oversees financial operations for two companies:
- Structural Components Fabrication (SCF) – a structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication company
- Ironware International – a high-end lighting and furnishings brand
The role is roughly a 70/30 split, with SCF as the primary focus and Ironware adding variety, creativity, and a different operational rhythm.
This is a hands-on leadership role today with a clear path to a CFO position as our companies continue to grow. If you’re someone who wants to build systems, develop a team, and eventually help steer the financial strategy of multiple businesses — keep reading.
What You’ll Be Responsible For - Financial Oversight (Both Companies)
- Own the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting across multiple entities
- Conduct detailed financial analysis and account analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings or revenue enhancement.
- Maintain rigorous internal controls over cash management, account reconciliation, double entry bookkeeping, and technical accounting procedures.
- Supervise the finance team to foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous learning
Construction & Job Cost Accounting (SCF Focus)
- Maintain accurate job cost accounting and WIP schedules
- Support percentage-of-completion reporting and project profitability analysis
- Partner with operations and project managers to improve cost visibility and forecasting
Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategy
- Develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts for multiple companies
- Support long-term planning, capital investments, and growth initiatives
Cash Flow & External Relationships
- Manage day-to-day cash flow planning and liquidity across businesses
- Support bonding, audits, insurance reviews, and external financial partners
Controls, Compliance & Risk
- Build and maintain strong internal controls (without unnecessary bureaucracy)
- Play a supporting role to our external accountant team to ensure compliance with tax regulations, filings, and reporting requirements
Team Leadership & Systems
- Lead and develop the accounting team (AP, AR, payroll, job costing)
- Improve processes, documentation, and workflows
- Optimize accounting systems and reporting tools
- Create clarity, consistency, and accountability across companies
What We’re Looking For - Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA or CMA preferred (or equivalent experience that proves you know your stuff)
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong background in construction or project-based accounting
- Comfortable overseeing multiple companies or entities
- Quickbooks Desktop Enterprise experience
- Advanced Excel skills and solid financial analysis instincts
Culture Fit (This Matters)
We’re a high-accountability, low-ego group. We value:
- Ownership over excuses
- Striving for individual growth over staying comfortable
- Respect, humor, and being fully yourself at work
If you prefer a rigid corporate ladder, this probably isn’t the role for you.
If you like putting your skills to the test to better the community around you — you’ll fit right in.
