Job Title: Head Middle School Band Director (Strike MS)

Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the instrumental music and band program at the assigned campus. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of five years of teaching experience preferred
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Demonstrated competency in instrumental music
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
- Ability to implement policy and procedures
- Ability to interpret data
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Proven record of UIL level (or other state’s equivalent assessment) for grade levels 6-8
- Fundamental knowledge of all wind / percussion instrument pedagogy and ability to demonstrate / model on each.
- Extensive knowledge of the literature for middle school band
- History of developing strong relationships with school administrators, other directors, and students
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Work with school administrators, Fine Arts Director, as well as the Head Band Director at the high school to develop a seamless band curriculum that allows for continual student growth and achievement.
- Work with the assistant director to implement district and UIL guidelines.
- Work with the assistant director to facilitate before or after-school sectionals or other rehearsals outside of the school day.
- Direct high school instrumental performers, such as concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, and UIL activities.
- Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
- Oversee band booster club, and support band booster club activities.
- Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
- Recommend policies to improve the program.
- Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
- Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band instruments and equipment.
- Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band director(s).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
