Responsible for independently managing complex, high-exposure E&S claims, including litigated matters involving nuanced coverage, liability, damages, and severe injury exposures. This role requires strong technical expertise in Commercial General Liability and specialty risks, with the ability to navigate non-standard policy language and unique exposures common in the E&S market.

The Examiner partners closely with defense counsel, independent adjusters, and internal stakeholders, while maintaining authority levels above staff adjusters. This role may provide technical guidance but does not have direct supervisory responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and interpret non-admitted/E&S policy language to determine coverage, liability, and exposure.
  • Independently manage a portfolio of complex, high-severity claims, including litigated matters and construction defect exposures.
  • Direct and oversee defense counsel, independent adjusters, and vendors to ensure strategic file handling and cost containment.
  • Develop and execute litigation and settlement strategies aligned with company guidelines and risk tolerance.
  • Establish and maintain accurate loss and expense reserves based on evolving exposure.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, including review of contracts, incident reports, expert evaluations, and legal filings.
  • Evaluate damages, liability, and coverage to drive timely and equitable claim resolution.
  • Maintain detailed and defensible file documentation in compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Manage diary and workflow to ensure timely follow-up and resolution milestones.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced adjusters as needed.
  • Deliver high-quality service to internal and external stakeholders, including brokers and insureds.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of Commercial General Liability claims handling, including litigated claims.
  • Experience interpreting complex coverage, including E&S or non-standard policies preferred.
  • Strong understanding of construction defect, premises liability, and complex casualty exposures.
  • Proven ability to manage litigation, negotiate settlements, and collaborate with legal counsel.
  • Knowledge of state DOI regulations and claims best practices.

Preferred / Advanced:

  • 7 years of claims experience, including high-exposure and complex litigation.
  • Experience in E&S, specialty lines, or surplus lines environments strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, legal procedures, and venue strategy.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and time management abilities.

Licensing:

  • Active resident adjuster license required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain multi-state non-resident licenses as needed.
