What are the responsibilities and job description for the Before and After School Care position at Streator YMCA?

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community
through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Before/After Care Staff is responsible for all children participating in the YMCA before/after care program. They will implement and facilitate purposeful activities at the site for their designated group. They support the YMCA’s promise to strengthen the community by interacting with members in a positive and meaningful way. Members are defined as anyone with a current or potential relationship with the Y, such as children, parents, staff, volunteers, community, donors, and guests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish positive relationships with parents, children, school personnel and other staff members.
  • Be a positive role model.
  • Supervise all children in a designated group to ensure safety.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Communicate and document children’s absences, injuries, and incidents according to policies and procedures.
  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage appropriate behavior. Document and communicate inappropriate behavior following disciplinary procedures.
  • Nurture children by facilitating purposeful programming that supports academic growth and enrichment opportunities.
  • Cultivate relationships by establishing a positive rapport with children, parents, volunteers, staff, and school personnel. Create a sense of belonging for the children by encouraging them to connect with others.
  • Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct. Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean the facility and care for equipment.
  • Maintain and possess accurate attendance at all times including bathroom breaks and every transition. Conduct face to name attendance verification.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and manage emotions effectively in all situations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Able to work flexible hours which may include:Before Care: 6:45 AM-School Day Begins Monday-Friday

After Care: School Dismissal-5:00 PM Monday-Friday

  • Must have or be enrolled in state mandated training within 30 days of employment. CPR/AED, First Aid required within 90 days.
  • Must have knowledge in the supervision and safety of children, must possess leadership skills that can assist in encouraging and motivating children.
  • Must complete The Gateways to Opportunity School-Age and Youth Development Credential Level 1 Training upon 90 days of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to stand, remain outdoors and maintain continual physical endurance for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, watch, listen and facilitate group activities.
  • Must be mentally alert and be able to process and follow directions.
  • Must be able to supervise and instruct large groups of children. Knowledge of sports and children’s programming is preferred.
