Overview
The Sr. Manager / Director of Power Marketing & Risk will have responsibility for managing the firms wholesale market and variable revenue exposure, including overseeing energy trading, and determining underwriting assumptions for variable revenues on prospective energy projects. This leader will own uncontracted revenue assumptions across the development portfolio as well as oversee the energy trading for the growing storage and PV/BESS hybrid fleet. The ideal candidate will support power sales structuring for PV solar, battery, PV/BESS hybrid and other innovative clean energy projects across the US. As energy projects become operational, this leader will be responsible for risk management of energy marketing and trading activities across Strata’s portfolio of assets.
Responsibilities
Key areas of responsibility:
- Responsible for overall forward-looking uncontracted revenue assumptions across the development portfolio as well as oversight of energy trading for the growing storage fleet.
- Responsible for supporting offtake structuring efforts for solar, battery, PV/BESS hybrid and other innovative clean energy projects across the US.
- Responsible for the risk management of energy marketing and trading activities across Strata’s portfolio of assets.
- Holistic ownership of regional and nodal forward merchant curves for renewable energy generation and the local potential for energy storage revenue.
- Analyze regional power market dynamics to create, maintain, and lead development of sophisticated pricing and financial models to assess energy project economics.
- Work with the investment team to assess credit and market risk and define key commercial contract terms.
- Collaborate with project development team to identify new target markets based on key power market indicators where premium returns could be realized.
- Maintain a risk-oriented mentality as the platform expands into new technologies and market strategies, by applying understanding of how market risk impacts portfolio economics.
- Assist the origination team with in-house and trusted third-party estimates for future margin while tracking credit exposures including mark-to-market energy hedges and scenario/sensitivity analysis.
- Advise Business Development team on origination of projects with favorable interconnection and pricing attributes.
- Own forward market price and volatility curves used by origination and development for transactions and portfolio valuation.
- Develop tools and frameworks to perform forward-looking congestion analysis, including developing and maintain models for forecasting nodal, zonal, and hub level prices in key markets.
- Develop and manage tools to produce short term price forecasts to inform bidding and dispatch decisions.
Qualifications
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a power marketing or power trading role. Focus and experience with strategies on behalf of physical assets, and the renewable energy sector is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, engineering, finance or a similarly related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- Intimate understanding of US power markets including state regulations, resource planning, transmission, congestion, delivery/settlement basis, renewable portfolio standards and forward energy curves.
- Demonstrated experience in wholesale/retail electric supply markets including experience executing PPAs, hedges and/or capacity transactions and auctions.
- Ability to interact with company personnel, external engineering firms, regulatory representatives, and ISO/RTOs representatives in a positive, team building manner.
- Excellent work ethic, flexibility, teamwork, and continuous improvement mindset.
- Strong project management skills, ability to prioritize work on multiple projects & demonstrate personal initiative to lead with limited supervision.
- Ability to tackle complex problems with many unknown variables and use data and research to make recommendations on key business decisions.
- Proficiency in using MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office environment, with regular travel required. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, twist and lift up to 20 pounds.
