Job Title: Grounds Technician
Reports to: Director of Operations Maintenance
Evaluated by: Director of Operations Maintenance
Job Goal: The goal of this position is to provide students, staff and the public with a safe, attractive and clean school grounds.
Essential Requirements: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements list below are a representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.
- Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assignment.
- Ability to performs a variety of outdoor maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to: prepare, establish, maintain, perform minor repairs, install landscape elements such as turf, trees, fences, playground equipment, surfacing, irrigation, concrete, asphalt, signage and drainage.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepares and maintains athletic fields, tracks and district property. Prepares and maintains landscaping elements including natural and synthetic turf, trees, shrubs, etc. Performs duties such as watering, laying sod, and painting, aerating grass, and maintaining trees.
- Maintain & clean surfacing.
- Install temporary fencing.
- Perform snow removal from parking, pedestrian and play areas when needed, utilizing loaders, plows, shovels, tractors, etc. Apply pre- and post-ice control material. Must have schedule flexibility to commit to early hour snow prep / removal and after hours snow prep / removal.
- Remove and/or cover graffiti.
- Paint parking areas and athletic fields.
- Operate, inspect and perform light maintenance on landscape maintenance construction equipment.
- Under direction, spray and apply selective and non-selective herbicides.
- Irrigate when needed.
- Respond to after-hour emergencies as needed.
- Assist custodial staff inside the buildings as needed.
- Operate, trucks, trailers, power tools, landscape equipment, such as mowers, sprayers and aerators.
- Assist with directing and guiding the work performed by seasonal workers.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Check all outdoor trash receptacles daily; empty as needed.
- Remove all debris from entryways, parking lots, playgrounds & courtyards.
- Using a backpack blower, clean property and playground as needed/weekly.
- Prepares yearly fertilization program based on needs addressed in soil analysis report.
- Order, store & maintain an inventory such as ice melt, fertilizer, field & parking lot paints & herbicides
- Meet with contractors for bid purposes to build, replace or repair outdoor items.
Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent experience.
- Some experience in grounds maintenance is preferred.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach about the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: Work is performed outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Days / Terms of Employment: 255 Days / Twelve-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
