Part Time Barista

Job Type: Part Time, Non-Exempt Non-Bargaining Unit

Reports to: General Manager & any cafe supervisor

Location: 2020 Broadway (between 69th and 70th), accessible via the A, C, B, D, 1, 2, 3 trains

Schedule: 24 hours per week including weekend shifts

About the cafe at Strand’s 2020 Broadway location: Opened in the summer of 2025, Strand’s newest location at 2020 Broadway is an exciting expansion of a long beloved New York institution. As a barista at the cafe, you will be an important part of ensuring that our customers not only have quality coffee drinks, but also that their experience in the cafe is an extension of their overall experience at Strand. We hope our baristas give our customers something to look forward to and help give them a reason to return to this location again and again.

Please note: While this cafe is located within Strand’s newest location and those hired will be Strand employees, subject to the benefits, policies and regulations therein, baristas are not booksellers. You will be expected to direct book lovers as necessary, but you will not be actively working in the bookstore on a daily basis. This position is best for those looking to work as a barista.

Essential Functions:

• Maintaining company standards and protocols including those related to customer service and food/health safety.
• Responsible for learning, understanding and speaking confidently about coffee and espresso related drinks and products as well as baked goods and food related products.
• Responsible for learning how to use, operate and adapt to coffee brewing and espresso making equipment, scales, timers, water towers, etc.
• Taking orders accurately and positively while also being responsible for all POS and cash handling responsibilities as necessary or as directed by supervisor(s).
• Responsible for receiving/signing for deliveries as necessary and taking stock of quality and amount of items delivered before finalizing interactions with vendors.
• Taking and recording temperatures of equipment and/or drinks/food to ensure equipment and product are in line with local, state and federal health guidelines.
• Completing inventory of product and supplies as necessary or as directed by supervisor(s).
• Keeps cafe and seating areas clean, stocked and organized consistently throughout the day.
• A true love of coffee and cafe culture, including customer service.
• Other duties as assigned.

Competency/Position Requirements:

• At least 1 year of coffee and espresso making experience, including pulling shots, weighing coffee and espresso grinds, foaming milk accurately depending on order (i.e. cappuccino vs. latte vs. macchiato, etc.).
• 1 years experience in customer service or high volume food service.
• POS and cash handling experience.
• Understanding of coffee beyond the drinks prepared, ideally can assess the difference between roasts and quality.
• Food handler’s license required for this position.
• Ability to be self-aware and hold oneself accountable to mistakes or errors when handling customer orders.
• Commitment to providing excellent customer service, including listening and adapting to customer preferences and needs.
• A can-do attitude regarding maintaining order and cleanliness in a food service environment. The ideal candidate will clean-as-they-go and use lulls in traffic to keep high serviced areas behind the bar and on the floor clean and up to code and company standards.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong conflict resolution skills. The ideal candidate will understand how to handle difficult conversations with customers calmly and effectively, while also able to communicate needs and concerns to co-workers with respect and maturity even in high-volume situations or during peak operating hours.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand for long periods, including up to 8 hours per day.
• Ability to bend and squat as necessary, as in stocking fridges, grabbing milk and product, as well as cleaning inside and outside of various areas and equipment.
• Ability to lift, pull, push and carry items and products weighing up to and over 50 lbs on a regular and as needed basis.
• Ability and knowledge to safely handle items with temperatures ranging from below freezing to well over boiling.

Compensation: $14-$15 per hour plus tips

Pay: $16.00 per hour
