Job Summary
Straightedge Fire Protection Services is seeking a highly skilled Lead Fire Protection Engineer to oversee the design, coordination, and technical execution of fire sprinkler systems, special hazard systems, and fire alarm/life-safety projects. This individual will serve as a technical expert, mentor junior staff, and ensure code-compliant, high-quality solutions for our clients.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Design
- Lead the engineering, layout, and design of fire sprinkler systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge.
- Engineer and review special hazard fire protection systems (FM-200, NOVEC 1230, CO₂, foam, clean agent, and industrial systems).
- Oversee and develop fire alarm and detection system designs, ensuring compatibility with sprinkler and special hazard systems.
- Produce and/or review hydraulic calculations, battery calculations, and technical documentation.
- Ensure all designs meet applicable codes and standards (NFPA, IBC, IFC, local AHJ requirements).
Project Oversight
- Serve as the technical lead across multiple projects simultaneously.
- Provide direction and problem-solving support to design teams, field crews, and project managers.
- Coordinate with GCs, owners, AHJs, and subcontractors to resolve project challenges.
- Conduct site visits, surveys, and system assessments as needed.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Train, guide, and support designers, junior engineers, and technicians.
- Review and approve drawings, submittals, and installation documentation.
- Help drive continuous improvement in engineering standards and processes.
Required Qualifications
- 5 years of fire protection engineering/design experience with fire sprinkler systems.
- Proven working knowledge of special hazard suppression systems and associated NFPA standards.
- Experience with fire alarm/life-safety system design and applicable codes.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or other design software.
- Strong understanding of NFPA 13, 20, 25, 72, 2001, and related codes.
- Ability to lead teams and manage multiple complex projects.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- NICET III or IV in Sprinkler Layout and/or Fire Alarm Systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field.
- Experience working with industrial, commercial, or special-hazard environments.
- PE license (Fire Protection) is a plus but not required.
