Summary Description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work assisting the Lead Mechanic and performing mechanical work in maintaining, repairing and overhauling a variety of light to heavy duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, automobiles, pickups and small engines, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Lead Mechanic.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Functions as a semi-skilled mechanic, assists the lead mechanic, and performs mechanical maintenance, repair and overhaul such as on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Operates welder to straighten, construct, rebuild or reinforce parts for equipment such as truck frames, boxes and hoist, and wings.
  • Performs general tune-ups using available computerized testing equipment; troubleshoots equipment to diagnose cause of operational problem; repairs defects; replaces worn-out parts and components such as exhaust pipes, mufflers, heaters, shocks, radiators, spark plugs and filters; provides input to specs for new equipment.
  • Responds to telephone and/or radio requests for emergency mechanical repair of equipment in the field; drives appropriate vehicle to the field and makes repairs.
  • Operates a variety of mechanical and power tools and equipment such as wrenches, acetylene and arc welders, hydraulic pressure gauges and computerized tune-up instruments.
  • Maintains necessary records or forms and logs of information such as parts used and time spent on a project.
  • Maintains clean work area such as sweep the shop floor, clean and store shop tools, etc.
  • Plows snow, hauls material and works on signing crew as needed; applies some knowledge of operation of all equipment.

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, automatic transmissions, cooling and electrical systems and general repair; ability to make repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment, including major overhauls; ability to diagnose problems using computerized and electronic test equipment; ability to operate tools and equipment necessary in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment; ability to identity, trouble-shoot and develop practical solutions for equipment malfunctions; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in Diesel Technical/Heavy Equipment Technician or related field and moderate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire date.

Physical & Environmental Characteristics

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting; no special vision is required; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; no special hearing perception is required; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

This work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to blood-borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
