Position Summary
We are looking for an entry-level estimator to join our preconstruction team in Ames, IA! You'll play an important role in preparing cost estimates for a large variety of commercial and industrial construction projects.
Summary of Duties
- Reviews proposal specifications and drawings
- Provides accurate quantity take-offs based on the drawings and specifications
- Reviews design options or construction options and determines best solutions based on cost, quality, and availability of materials, equipment, or other factors
- Uses estimating software to prepare, develop, and facilitate estimates, bids, and takeoffs
- Solicits and obtains material and subcontractor quotes and ensures understanding of project requirements, scope of work, work durations, schedule, and other aspects relevant to the project
- Identifies and reports errors, ambiguities, and missing information in contract documents. Seeks additional information and clarification from architects, engineers, and owners as needed
- Produces estimates that are accurate and consider risk factors and construction methods
- Maintains positive relations with clients, subcontractors, and the community
- Communicates effectively with other members of the team and works as a part of a team
- Pay perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 2-year technical degree in a construction-related program required. 4-year degree in construction engineering, construction management, civil engineering, or similar preferred.
- Previous exposure to estimating process
- Must possess strong skills in math, analytical reading, independent judgement, organization, and time management to work efficiently under tight deadlines
- Proficiency in basic software applications such as Microsoft 365, experience with software such as Sage, eTakeoff, InSite, or other related program is a bonus
- Ability to work with a team and be thoughtful to others' needs while demonstrating our core values of Positive, Caring, Integrity, Teamwork, Helpful, and Planful
Travel: Occasional out-of-town travel to bids, trainings, or jobsites may be expected. No overnight travel required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Work in completed in an office setting; however may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, loud noises, and more within OSHA standards when visiting the jobsite. Employees may be exposed to outdoor conditions that include inclement weather such as heat, humidity, cold, wild, and dust. May be expected to carry up to 30 pounds occasionally, stand for long periods of time, walk for moderate-to-long distances on varying surface conditions, climb, crawl, crouch, reach, grip, push, and pull without issue.
