What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Systems Design Architect position at Stormentum?
Who We Are
Stormentum is accelerating energy independence by helping solar installers provide storage-first systems that homeowners can actually afford. Our modular, battery-agnostic inverter platform cuts hardware costs by 50% and reduces total system costs by up to 30%, giving installers full control over design, supply chain, and margins.
Our founding team has spent careers at the frontier of residential solar and storage — designing the hardware, building the software, and scaling the teams that brought clean energy into millions of homes. We're building Stormentum to solve the hardest problem in the space: making storage-first systems affordable enough for every homeowner, not just early adopters.
About The Role
At Stormentum you'll join a team of engineers advancing the development of a modular, battery-agnostic inverter platform for residential solar and storage. As Staff Systems Design Architect you'll operate at the system level — translating product requirements into actionable engineering specifications, defining how subsystems interact, and guiding hardware and firmware teams on the best way to build it. You'll own the architecture that integrates Stormentum's platform with the outside world — solar panels, battery systems, the electrical grid, and residential energy infrastructure — taking it from design through integration, certification, and production.
What You'll Do
- Define and decompose system-level requirements into hardware, firmware, controls, and integration specifications
- Develop and maintain system block diagrams and interface control documents
- Define system-level performance and safety test requirements and support the development of automated test equipment to accelerate testing
- Own and report on architectural trade-offs across high voltage, low voltage, mechanical, and communications domains
- Lead engineering teams through the Hazard and Risk Assessment and support the DFMEA, PFMEA, and safety test processes
- Design the system integration architecture connecting Stormentum's platform with solar PV systems, battery storage, residential loads, and the electrical grid
- Run system-level simulations to evaluate design options and guide engineering decisions
- Lead the product through 3rd-party integrations and support certification including UL and applicable grid codes
- Serve as the primary technical liaison between product and engineering — translating customer, installer, and grid requirements into engineering direction
- Lead system-level design reviews and risk assessments across subsystems
- Manage the handoff from design through manufacturing ensuring designs are optimized for production
- Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, firmware, controls, and hardware teams across the full product lifecycle
What You'll Bring
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics
- 5 years of experience in electrical systems design with demonstrated concept-to-production ownership
- Deep experience integrating power electronics systems with external interfaces — grid, solar, storage, or distributed energy resources
- Deep experience simulating system-level electrical physics models and using Mathworks or similar software tools and analyzing subcomponent topologies and component parameters to find optimal solutions to product-level requirements
- Experience taking power electronics products through regulatory certification including processes outlined in UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, and UL 1741 PCS
- Breadth across high voltage, low voltage, mechanical, thermal, and communications domains
- Experience with residential solar, storage, or grid-tied inverter systems
- Knowledge of grid-forming inverter technologies and advanced grid-support functions
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across hardware, firmware, controls, and mechanical disciplines
Additional Desired Skills
- Experience maintaining requirements within tools such as Doors, JAMA, or Polarion
- Experience with processes outlined in UL 1998, UL 991, and IEC 61508
- Familiarity with international grid standards including CSA C22.2 No. 107.1, IEC 62109-1/-2, and EN 50549 a plus
