Required Qualifications (as Evidenced By An Attached Resume)
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in hand by May 2026. Two (2) years of full-time administrative experience or experience in higher education (student experience may be considered). Project management experience. Experience working with diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education or related field. Event/initiative coordination experience. Experience supporting retention-focused initiatives. Experience with Google Workspace, including experience creating electronic forms, managing and organizing data, and running basic queries or reports.
Brief Description Of Duties
The Student Success Program Coordinator is a newly created position within the Division of Student Affairs responsible for advancing campus-wide student success initiatives, with a particular focus on identified and priority student populations. The position operates under the general direction of the Strategic Lead for Student Success and Retention and resides in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
The Program Coordinator supports campus-wide student success and retention efforts, with a particular emphasis on serving identified student populations. As a foundational role on campus, the Program Coordinator assists in operationalizing new initiatives, supporting data-informed outreach, and advancing the institution’s retention and student engagement goals.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong administrative, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills, along with excellent organizational and time management abilities and exceptional attention to detail. The role requires frequent interaction with campus partners and students, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
The Program Coordinator will work closely with team members to support the overall effectiveness of new and evolving initiatives. This includes participating in divisional meetings, sharing insights, and contributing to collaborative decision-making processes. The position plays an important role in fostering a cooperative, supportive team culture while working collectively toward shared retention and student success goals.
Program Coordination and Student Outreach
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
Salary: $60,000-$62,000 $4,000 Location Pay = $64,000-$66,000 Total Compensation
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Program Coordination and Student Outreach
- Support the implementation of retention initiatives that promote belonging, persistence, and academic momentum, ensuring alignment with divisional priorities and established best practices.
- Assist in the development and coordination of short- and long-term retention efforts, with a focus on the first-year experience and early alert interventions by coordinating outreach and program logistics.
- Gather and analyze feedback and data to help identify emerging student needs and potential gaps in services; contribute ideas and assist with pilot programs and targeted outreach efforts as directed by leadership.
- Develop supportive relationships with first-year students particularly out-of-state and international students through consistent tracking, outreach, check-ins, and appropriate referrals to campus resources in coordination with relevant campus offices.
- Coordinate logistical aspects of retention-focused programs for priority student populations, including scheduling, communications, event preparation, and outreach efforts to encourage participation in student success initiatives.
- Provide assistance with retention-focused initiatives by engaging directly with students and connecting them to services, programs, and opportunities that promote belonging and persistence.
- Assist students in navigating their transition into and through the first year, helping them feel connected, informed, and supported as they progress toward their sophomore year through coordinated outreach and student engagement activities.
- Provide direct outreach, encouragement, and practical guidance to students to support their continued enrollment and persistence.
- Support the implementation of student success and retention initiatives by coordinating logistics, following established processes, and collaborating with campus partners to ensure programs are carried out as designed and aligned with institutional goals.
- Track and update retention and first-year student data.
- Assist with outreach efforts and help evaluate program effectiveness.
- Support collection and organization of participation and outcome data.
- Help identify trends and potential areas of concern in student success data.
- Contribute to summaries and recommendations based on assessment results for review by leadership.
- Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and updates for internal stakeholders
- Participate in professional development opportunities that support learning, growth, and skill development (e.g., training, workshops, webinars, committees).
- Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
