Brief Description Of Duties

The Assistant Learning Specialist provides academic skill-building support to undergraduate students, advancing the university’s mission of retention, persistence, and graduation by helping students develop self-regulated learning habits and overcome barriers to academic success. The assistant learning specialist leads students through active skill-building techniques, serves as a vital link to campus resources through intentional referrals, and tracks student outcomes to ensure measurable academic growth. Under the leadership of a learning specialist, the assistant learning specialist collaborates with divisional and campus-wide partners to support and facilitate initiatives focused on both proactive academic preparation for incoming students and intensive academic recovery for those facing academic challenges. The role also supports the broader development, delivery, and supervision of the center's programming, which may include accountability study groups, skill-based peer tutoring, integrated support labs/workshops, presentations, and specialized course instruction. The assistant learning specialist prioritizes both academic rigor and student belonging, empowering students to transition from passive studying to self-regulated, metacognitive learning in a research university environment.

This role is designed for a growth-oriented professional with strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills. The incumbent must be eager to build their knowledge of how students learn and be able to translate complex theories into practical, actionable study behaviors for undergraduate students. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently as well as part of a dynamic team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Academic Success Coaching

  • Lead recurring academic success coaching sessions on topics such as evidence-based learning strategies, study behaviors, time management, test-taking strategies, note-taking strategies, reading comprehension, and self-advocacy skills
  • Create personalized academic success plans for students, monitor students’ academic and skill-building progress, and maintain accurate records of student interactions
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with other student support services, ensuring seamless two-way referrals that connect students with appropriate resources
  • Manage a dedicated student caseload primarily facilitating recurring small-group sessions while maintaining the flexibility to provide individualized support as needed to meet specific student outcomes and retention goals
  • Provide on-going outreach and support to students with lower academic preparation, helping them transition to university-level expectations before academic struggles arise
  • Assist with implementing specialized interventions for students on academic action, focusing on metacognitive strategies, behavioral changes, and resource referrals
  • Participate in on-going training and professional development to increase knowledge of evidence-based learning, the science of learning, student development, and trends in higher education

Program Support

  • Design and facilitate workshops, programs, and initiatives that directly support undergraduate students’ development as learners at a four-year research university
  • Deliver presentations on academic success topics and potentially serve as an instructor for designated academic success courses
  • Support the development, facilitation, and supervision of the center's programming which may include accountability study groups, skill-based peer tutoring, integrated support labs/workshops, presentations, and specialized course instruction
  • Design and curate a suite of evidence-based academic success resources such as study guides, instructional videos, and social media content tailored to undergraduate learners

Student Staff Supervision

  • Provide guidance, training, and supervision to undergraduate student staff, peer tutors, and mentors
  • Assist with student staff recruitment and onboarding efforts

Administrative Support And Center Outreach

  • Utilize student success software, currently EAB Navigate360, to outreach to students, maintain accurate records, and monitor student progress
  • Assist the learning specialists in gathering qualitative and quantitative data for mid-year and annual assessment reports

  • Help to promote ASTC services to the campus community
