Required Qualifications (as Evidenced By An Attached Resume)

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time administrative experience. Experience in student conduct. Experience working with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and community organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, Student Administration or a related field. Experience with data management and report generation. Experience in college/university setting. Experience with conduct management systems (Maxient, Advocate, etc.). Supervisory experience. Experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google apps. Customer service experience.

Brief Description Of Duties

The Assistant Director of Residential Conduct & Community Standards directly reports to the Associate Director of Residential Conduct & Community Standards. The selected candidate will be responsible for determining the level of alleged violation, investigation of case as needed, including, speaking to parties involved in the alleged violations and determining the level of process required to resolve the complaint. The Assistant Director of Residential Conduct & Community Standards will assist in managing the judicial process, which will include administrative oversight and assist in policy development and enforcement.

The incumbent should be able to communicate effectively with our diverse campus population, have strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and strong customer service skills. The Incumbent must be able to produce accurate documents independently and have knowledge of student conduct adjudication. The incumbent will be responsible to research issues, assess needs, prepare reports, and resolve student conduct matters. The incumbent will be the "go-to person" when the Associate Director of Residential Conduct and Community Standards is not available and may represent them when necessary.

Administrative Hearings

  • Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Conduct & Community Standards, the Assistant Director utilizes restorative practices and an equity mindset as they:
    • Directly supervise the Coordinator of Residential Conduct & Community Standards
    • Assist the Associate Director with the adjudication of cases referred for disciplinary action, including cases warranting interim measures.
    • Maintain the administrative hearing processes as identified in the Code of Student Responsibility and the Terms of Occupancy document.
    • Conduct administrative hearings and make decisions regarding case resolution for student misconduct cases per University policies and processes.
    • Oversee administrative case management and response coordination for student residents living in university housing and/or students utilizing services across Housing, Dining, & Auxiliary Enterprises.
    • Receive, review, and process appeal requests.
    • Schedule and coordinate pre-hearing advice and Administrative Hearings.
    • Temporary suspensions and relocations: write letters and coordinate notice to student(s) and staff.
Planning and Administration

  • Assist in the supervision of one coordinator and one assistant coordinator and support 50 professional live-in staff with student conduct case management across all residential communities.
  • Ensure that staff maintain a clear understanding of administrative procedures and educational initiatives across residential communities.
  • Develop effective working relationships with the 60 colleagues that make up our staff.
  • Oversee and maintain the daily operations of the Student Conduct functional area.
  • Collaborate to maintain consistent procedures, protocols, and practices within student conduct case management across all residential communities.
  • Maintain conduct records for reposts and assessment
  • Respond to inquiries regarding policies and procedures; respond to parental inquiries and concerns.

Student Development and Supervision

  • Supervision of Staff Assistant and Assistant Coordinator (graduate student) and two Residence Hall Directors with Community Standards function assignment.
  • Facilitate and manage training for student conduct across all levels.
  • Close collaboration with the Center for Prevention and Outreach, the University Counseling and Psychological Services, Campus Residences, University Police, and all University Academic and Administrative departments and offices in responding to students at risk and providing appropriate follow-up in the context of the campus-wide Behavioral Assessment Committee (BAC).
  • Liaison to University Police, Campus Residences Student Advocate.

Professional Development and Committee Involvement

  • Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
  • Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Salary: $68,000-$72,000 $4,000 Location Pay = $72,000-$76,000 Total Compensation

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
