Position Summary: The Nurse Educator is responsible for facilitating the development of clinical excellence through active participation in orientation, role transition, continuing education and professional development. In this position the Educator provides instruction that will contribute to competency of the nursing staff, meet regulatory requirements, and promote professional growth. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior communication, prioritization and organizational skills while adhering to the department’s high standard of excellence.

Job Duties & Essential Functions

  • Participates in the development and instruction of all levels of nursing personnel orientation, skills training and continuing education.
  • Assumes preceptor role in orientation of nursing personnel and students on the unit when needed. Provides written documentation to nursing leadership of achieved competencies by the orientee according to the standards of care for the unit/service.
  • Develops, implements and revises curriculum objectives and content in response to evaluation of learner needs and the need to improve nursing services.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Leadership to plan in-service programs, conferences and lectures, thereby encouraging the continued development of nursing staff.
  • Educates nursing staff (including technical skills and use of equipment) utilizing verbalization and return demonstration to assure successful completion and achievement of competencies.
  • Provides ongoing instruction of technical skills and equipment in accordance to the hospital policies and procedures to all nursing staff.
  • Monitors the quality of nursing care rendered and the documentation of the nursing process through direct interaction with nursing staff members and their assigned patients and families.
  • Coordinates delivery of patient care by all health professionals by actively sharing knowledge and ideas with hospital leadership.
  • Attends and participates in committees with physicians, administrators and nursing related to the clinical area. Represents and clarifies the needs of the nursing staff and the patient population.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Current licensure to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • Minimum 5 years nursing experience with 2 years in acute or critical care unit.
  • Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Bachelors of Science in nursing degree. (Under New York State Education Law
  • 6905 (commonly referred to as the BSN in 10), all Registered Nurses licensed on or after June 18, 2020, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within 10 years of their initial RN licensure to maintain their ability to practice in the State of New York. Failure to meet this legal requirement may impact your employment status .)

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Current ACLS and PALS provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Prior experience as a Nurse Educator.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness.
  • May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations.
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
  • This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.

Anticipated Pay Range

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

As part of Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) combines the best in academic and community medicine, improving access to advanced medical care for residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island. With 70 beds, SBELIH is Suffolk County’s first hospital, serving the North Fork since 1905. SBELIH provides care to 25,000 year-round residents and expanding to 60,000 summer residents with comprehensive healthcare solutions, including behavioral health, medical-surgical, orthopedics and general surgery, wound care, interventional pain management and GI, advanced ambulatory care, diagnostic, and physical therapy services. The hospital is also a clinical campus and training site for Stony Brook Medicine, with its first SBELIH Psychiatry resident having graduated in 2022.
