What are the responsibilities and job description for the MA/Surgical Coordinator position at Stony Brook Administrative Services?
Responsibilities:
- Place patients in the examination rooms and document for physician the medications, vitals and main reason for the visit.
- Record Vital Signs including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse & temperature.
- Enter patient information into the Electronic Medical Record.
- Assist the physician with special procedures and examinations as needed.
- Collect blood or other laboratory specimens as requested by the physician.
- Perform routine laboratory tests and EKGs.
- Obtain previous test results from outside labs, radiology, doctor's offices, etc.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patient in a clear and effective manner.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of medical supplies in each exam room.
- Ensure the cleanliness of each exam room. Prep rooms after each patient and for specific procedures as needed.
- Order medical supplies as needed.
- Ensure HIPAA guidelines are followed at all times.
- Perform administrative duties when needed: answering phones, scheduling appointments.
- Liaison between the patient and physician.
- Schedule and pre-authorize all surgeries and preoperative appointments.
- Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures with the patient and OR.
- Maintains updated and accurate notes in electronic medical record concerning all billing and insurance information.
- Contacts third party carriers to verify insurance benefits and obtains pre-authorization for all procedures.
- Generates insurance referrals as directed by the medical provider.
- Assists medical provider with patient care information applicable to scheduled service.
- Acts as point-of-contact for patients for rescheduled procedures and cancellations.
- Other projects as assigned.

Position Requirements
Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Two years of relevant surgical coordinator experience,
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- At least 1 year of prior experience working as a Medical Assistant in a busy physician practice.
- Certification as Medical Assistant
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of clerical and clinical practices and procedures
- Computer and/or EMR experience
- Excellent attention to detail, along with the ability to organize and prioritize workload while managing multiple priorities
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills
Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit for long periods of time, and must have manual dexterity to work computer systems and keyboard. It is reasonable to anticipate lifting 10 -15 pounds in any given day.
