Job Description for:  Mechanic I

Reports to:  Transportation Director & Supervisor

Qualifications:  High School Diploma

At a minimum, an employee must possess a current North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with “P”, “S” and “N” endorsements as required by DMV and pass a DOT drug and alcohol test. Stokes pocket card is optional. 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assists Mechanic II and IIIs with preventative maintenance and repairs to yellow and activity buses as well as fuel trucks and other vehicles as needed. 
  2. Assists garage staff with answering the phone and monitoring the bus radio.
  3. Responsible for being familiar with the Stokes County Schools Transportation Standard Operational Manual for Mechanic I position.
  4. Assists mechanics with their 30-day monthly inspections of buses/trucks in the shop. 
  5. Be aware of and understand pertinent OSHA requirements.
  6. Partly responsible for custodial duties at bus garage including cleaning restroom and break room, empty trash cans in offices, sweeping service bays, mowing and trimming grass and maintaining bus garage parking lot as needed.
  7. Assists mechanics in shuttling buses, picking up or delivering service vehicles and/or parts and operating forklift as needed to load and unload parts deliveries.
  8. All mechanics are expected to drive the fuel truck route in the absence of the regular driver. This rotation or duty will be assigned by the Director or Supervisor. Mechanics must hold the endorsements and training required to drive the fuel truck route. 





Stokes County Schools Mechanic I Job Description

  • Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Mechanic I to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employees must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
    • Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes in conjunction with the operation of hand power tools.
    • Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
    • Manual dexterity to hand-carry parts and supplies as well as climb in, and under, buses and vehicles.
    • Must be able to frequently enter and exit fuel buses and other vehicles which requires being able to reach overhead to pull body into vehicle while walking up steps.
    • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, such as concrete, metal and gravel including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
    • Must be able to climb on and off school buses safely.
    • Able to lie on floor and strenuously work off back while under a bus and with arms extended upwards to hold a part (e.g. rear end, compressor, exhaust parts, starter and weighing up to 50 pounds).
  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Mechanic I encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    • Work of the Mechanic I is performed indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Work environment periodically exposes the employee to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a transportation department garage when completing duties of a Mechanic I.
    • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in transportation garages such as oil, grease, emission fluids, gasoline, and diesel fuel. May spend 100% of the day exposed to heat, cold, water, dust, irritants, etc.  All Mechanics may be exposed to and work with hazardous materials.
