Behavior Support Specialist 

 

General Definition of Work 

Performs difficult professional work acting as a resource to staff needing behavior assessments, interventions, training, placement or outside resource referrals, providing assessments and crisis intervention services, leading and attending various behavior and teaching team meetings, keeping related records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Continuous oversight is exercised over Behavior Support Technicians.

Essential Functions 

  • Attends Regional Meetings for Behavior Support.
  • Serves as a member of the MTSS District Team for SEL/Behavior.
  • Work with school MTSS & IEP teams to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments and develop Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Provide direct support to students by assisting in developing, implementing and monitoring behavior management plans/strategies and ensure that they are implemented with fidelity.
  • Facilitate student groups targeted at developing appropriate social, coping and conflict resolution skills
  • Respond to students in crisis and implement proactive strategies to prevent crisis situations.
  • Support classroom teachers through consultation, coaching, & modeling to encourage intervention with fidelity in the classroom setting for maximum student success
  • Consult with appropriate faculty, parents and community agencies to facilitate the development and communication of strong intervention plans that bridge home, school and community agencies
  • Supports Behavior Support Technicians with intervention implementation and data collection
  • Conducts staff training around behavior supports and MTSS. 
  • Performs related work as required. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of behavior evaluation and assessment, crisis intervention and training. 
  • Thorough knowledge of community agencies available to serve and assist students. 
  • Ability to conduct interviews and assessment sessions effectively and to analyze attitudes and problems objectively. 
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to maintain detailed records. 
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software. 
  • Ability to learn specialized equipment and software based on district needs. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and administration. 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree or NC licensure in special education preferred
  • Experience in the field of mental health, education, and/or behavior intervention
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst would be considered.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker would be considered.
  • 5 years experience working in a school setting (preferred)
  • Training and/or experience with research-based behavior support models
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required

                       

Physical Requirements 

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force. 
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting. 
  • Work has standard vision requirements. 
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. 
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities. 
  • Work has no exposure to environmental conditions. 
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). 

 

Special Requirements 

  • Non-violent crisis intervention training certification within six (6) months.
