PURPOSE
The Technical Services Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the Technical Services Team which includes Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Mine Planning, Mine Services, Metallurgy/Lab Services and Closure. Technical support and engineering expertise to the Project including project execution, project operations and project support teams are also role responsibilities. The individual will promote safe work practice and risk management strategies and will develop and oversee short-term, medium-term and long-term mine plans in compliance with the Planning process (LoOP).
The Technical Services Manager will optimize mine designs and schedules to ensure mine plans generate maximum safety, production and value. This role will also manage technical studies (trade-offs, conceptual) focused on expanding mineable resources, improving production and optimizing capital and operating costs and will oversee reporting of resources and reserves as well as coach and mentor personnel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with all project teams to ensure compliance with the Planning process (LoOP). Follow corporate guidelines and planning schedule to deliver mine plans in a timely and high-quality manner.
- Provide leadership and manage a team of technical professionals responsible for the development of short-term, medium-term and long-term mine plans during the execution and operational phases.
- Collaborate with project teams (External Contractors/Consultants) to progress technical work and studies.
- Ensure high quality geologic data is collected, modelled and used for generation of mine resource models.
- Oversee the mine-wide cost model (XERAS) and associated reports and reconciliation.
- Build strong working relationship with Business Strategy and Business Improvement team.
- Manage the site-wide closure plan including quantities and costs. Ensure closure cost elements are updated and reported per the planning process.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory standards for all team members and contractors.
- Participate in and lead mine safety interactions and hazard identification.
- Manage the performance of consultants and contractors to deliver high quality work in support of the Project execution and Operation.
- Maintain strong and effective relationships with all internal/external stakeholders.
- Prepare budgets, schedules and reconciliation for Technical Services aspects of the Operation.
- Manage and participate in technical study work related to growth and improvement opportunities across the Project.
- Provide services required for sign-off of Resources and Reserves (Professional Registration preferred).
- Work closely with Environmental and Permitting teams in support of environmental compliance and project permitting deliverables and timelines.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in Mine Engineering, Geology or equivalent related degree as well as a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the mining industry including operational and project related work are required. The chosen candidate must have experience as a Resources or Reserves Competent Person for underground mining, demonstrated experience in adding value to mine design/operation through improved performance and reduction of costs, experience in new project development including resource development, mining engineering, metallurgy and project studies as well as experience in budgeting and forecasting. Also essential is knowledge of Geotechnical modelling and application of ground support in underground environment along with demonstrated excellence in health, safety, environmental awareness, and compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, and regulations. Spanish Speaking skills would be a plus.
Technical/Specialist qualifications needed by this role include prior experience and/or Competent Person (CP) / Qualified Person (QP) certification (or ability to receive certification) with a qualifying professional organization and, technical competency in Mining Engineering in base metals, preferably with sublevel open stoping (SLOS). Also vital are experience with geologic data collection (drilling, sampling, mapping) and resource modelling, with financial modelling, cost management and cost estimating techniques and, with designing underground mines, including development, mining techniques, equipment selection and ventilation design.
ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS
The Technical Services Manager will report directly to the General Manager, Operations and will manage a minimum of five (5) direct reports; a Geology Superintendent, Geotechnical Engineering Superintendent, Mine Planning Superintendent, Mine Services Superintendent, and a Metallurgy/Lab Services Superintendent. Additionally, this role will oversee a minimum of fifty (50) indirect reports.
