What are the responsibilities and job description for the HR Generalist position at Stinker Stores?
HR Generalist
The HR Generalist is the go-to person for Store Managers and District Managers, offering support across all things HR. Whether it's recruiting, handling employee relations, managing disciplinary actions, workers’ comp, policy stuff, compensation, or training – you’ve got it covered! Basically, if it’s HR-related, you’re the one making it happen.
About Stinker
Founded in 1936, Stinker is everyone’s first choice for work, convenience, food, family, and fun! Located across Idaho, Colorado, and Wyoming, Stinker is a family-owned, people-focused convenience leader. Led by our Skunktastik Mascot, Polecat Pete, Stinker’s purpose is to make our world a better place by being a bright spot in the lives we touch- one employee, one customer, and one community at a time. Plus, we don't take ourselves too seriously- come on, we have a skunk as a mascot! We look for opportunities to have fun each day and ensure we make decisions that put our people first.
Now, what's in it for you when you join Pete’s Posse? Well, not only do you get to work with an amazing crew, but you also get a whole bunch of perks that makes life smell even sweeter. We're all about taking care of our people, and here’s how we do it:
- Competitive Pay with merit-based raises, and profit sharing twice a year- because when the company does well, we celebrate with you!
- Access to the DailyPay app- so you can access your hard-earned cash whenever life strikes, in advance of regular paydays.
- 7 paid holidays a year.
- Paid Time Off (PTO) that grows with your tenure, so the longer you’re with us, the more time you get to relax!
- Health Benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and options for a Health Savings Account (HSA) to help you save for healthcare costs or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for medical and dependent care expenses, as well as accident coverage and optional life insurance. Free Virtual Medical Services when enrolled in medical, so you can handle minor health issues from the comfort of your home.
- 401(k) with a skunktastic annual company discretionary match that grows with your tenure, because we want to help you build a secure future!
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help you with life’s challenges- whether it’s managing stress, tackling financial issues, or navigating legal questions, the EAP provides support.
So, are you ready to join a fun, growing company that values not just customers and the community, but our team members who make it all possible? At Stinker, we don’t just want you to have a job- we want you to have a career where you thrive, have fun, and grow with us. Because when you succeed, we all succeed!
What You’ll Do
- Keep our job applicant tracking system running smoothly, because nothing says “organized” like a system that actually works (and doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out).
- Help managers find paw-some talent by reaching out to community job services, staffing agencies, job boards, and websites.
- Train management teams on the recruitment process, making sure they’re armed with the tools to find top talent, and update the process as needed – because even the best recruitment strategies need a little TLC (and maybe a glow-up)!
- Manage and build partnerships with external agencies, like Indeed, to ensure we have a steady stream of candidates and a strong recruiting pipeline that’s stronger than a double shot of espresso.
- Assist with promotions, welcome back rehires, and check background results – ensuring our team is full of rockstars, past and future, with no skeletons in the closet!
- Screen and interview applicants to make sure they match what we’re looking for – Basically, you’re a matchmaker in disguise!
- Support the employee experience through HR programs, processes, and the endless variety of questions that start with, "This might be a weird question, but..."
- Learn and follow employment laws, company policies, to include administering our Drug-Free Workplace policy and For Cause testing process, because occasionally an employee's actions inspire the question, "Should we look into that?"
- Continuously grow your HR knowledge through training, workshops, networking, and the occasional rabbit hole that starts with one policy question and ends three hours later.
- Help track employee concerns and support fair, consistent follow-up across locations—because every concern deserves attention, and every good HR professional loves a well-documented paper trail.
- Help update job descriptions and organizational charts so everyone knows who does what, who reports to whom, and why that answer occasionally changes.
- Partner on compensation reviews, job classifications, and special HR projects- because spreadsheets don't update themselves (yet).
- Be a trusted resource for leaders by answering questions, support performance reviews and corrective action processes by helping leaders navigate documentation, coaching conversations, and the finer points of "if it isn't documented, it didn't happen."
- Serve as a champion for company culture, employee engagement, and all the little things that make work feel less like work.
- Be prepared for the occasional unexpected HR adventure, because if you've worked in HR long enough, you've learned that every day starts with a plan and ends with a story.
What You’ll Need
- Build strong working relationships throughout the organization and knows how to adapt communication styles to different audiences, personalities, and occasional workplace quirks.
- A solution-focused mindset- you get five minutes to complain, then we kick tail!
- Basic understanding of HR terms and processes, or a strong willingness to learn quickly- because everyone starts somewhere, and nobody is born knowing what FMLA stands for.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to connect clearly, professionally, and in a way that prevents the dreaded "per my last email" follow-up.
- Good time management and attention to detail- there are a lot of moving pieces and skunks headed in every direction!
- Able to work independently on routine tasks while also collaborating well with others when needed, because knowing when to handle it yourself and when to call in the group chat is an underrated skill.
- Dependable, flexible, growth-minded, and eager to help and occasionally ask, “Is there a better way to do this?”
- Able to handle sensitive information with care and always maintain confidentiality, like how grandma guards her cookie recipe from the neighbors.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience in a people-focused role—because sometimes the best HR education comes from years of answering questions that start with, "Do you have a minute?"
- Some HR experience is preferred, but we know great HR professionals come from all kinds of backgrounds, and everyone starts somewhere.
- Comfortable navigating Microsoft Office, learning new HR technology, and operating standard office equipment without declaring war on the printer.
- A passion for sightseeing, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to travel to multiple store locations to support managers and team members.
- Comfortably working in an office environment may include extended periods of sitting at a desk and spending quality time with a computer screen as well as surrounded by furry friends (That’s right, we’re dog friendly!).
- Willing to consent to a background check- because how else are we supposed to know if you’re actually just three skunks in a trench coat or not???
