Position Overview The NMHM is responsible for the cultivation, preservation, use, and development of the nation's National Historic Landmark medical collection that consists of human and animal remains, manufactured artifacts, archival materials, and other collections of unique and inestimable clinical, scientific, social, cultural, historic, and economic value. The Education Coordinator develops, implements, and evaluates the tour, education, outreach and volunteer programs for the museum and manages the volunteer and intern program to support the museum mission. Essential Job Function
- Suggests and implements guidelines and procedures for the conduct and evaluation of the docent program components
- Recruits, interviews, and trains docents for the NMHM and supervises docents for selection activities
- Regularly reviews service, operations, and fiscal aspects of the docent program
- Manages volunteers through Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS)
- Consults with NMHM management and staff regarding the suitability and feasibility of using volunteers for the docent program and various NMHM activities
- Responds to requests from staff for individual and/or group volunteer assistance by devising appropriate methods and procedures for recruiting, screening, and referring qualified volunteers who meet docent or project requirements
- Manages the NMHM tour program
- Suggests, develops, implements, and evaluates tour programs, including pre- and post-visit supplementary materials
- Receives tour requests and schedules both guided and unguided group visits to the NMHM
- Works closely with the different departments of NMHM to coordinate individualized tours and presentations for special requests and groups
- Works with the Public Affairs staff to develop marketing strategies regarding all areas of educational programming
- Develops programs that are age and skill level appropriate, developmental in nature, meaningful, and highly motivating
- Participates in the development of exhibitions, providing insights of the general publics and docents' perspectives and sensibilities
- Coordinates and operates the NMHM's community outreach programs
- Serves as a liaison between requesting organizations and staff who provide off-site programs
- Cultivates a cooperative relationship between the military and civilian community by establishing and maintaining liaison in the community with civic organizations, youth groups, private associations, educational institutions, national associations, medical associations, and any other sources that may be directly involved in any aspects of the outreach program
- With Public Affairs staff, coordinates military retirement and enlistment ceremonies at the NMHM
- Coordinates the VSAs and other staff for tours, special events, and programs Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in science, history, or museum studies
- Must have at least 8 years of professional tour guide and public program planning and execution
- Must have at least 5 years of docent management experience (internships not counted as experience)
- Must have knowledge and experience in general administration, including training and managing staff and volunteers, supervising employees, and working with diverse populations
