Responsibilities:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for assisting in the supervision of assigned staff in accordance with their job descriptions, maintaining a high standard of work and for timely and accurate reporting of tests in their section. Responsible for preparing laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by pathologists. Organizes and prepares incoming tissue specimens for analysis and reports results in a timely manner. Performs duties which may require both technical and professional judgment. Prepares slides, performs special staining techniques and other histological procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to laboratory policies and procedures. Reports critical values according to patient age. Ensures proper documentation required or any consent forms needed are submitted. Maintains files, slides and blocks accurately and in a retrievable manner. Maintains equipment, chemicals and reagents in areas assigned to them. Participates in and aids the Section Supervisor in developing and implementing all policies relating to quality improvement, quality control, instrument and inventory maintenance and personnel safety and productivity. Participates in QC, QA and maintenance programs and follows all safety procedures. Assures timely and accurate charging of procedures performed.

May be required to evaluate and write procedures for new methods, participate in teaching, continuing education, validation of instruments or methods and other supervisory activities. May be required to supervise the entire laboratory on rotating weekends and holidays, to attend laboratory related committee meetings and to perform other such duties in the absence of Section Supervisor as required by the Laboratory Manager. This position is required to have after hours on call duties. Performs other related duties with a minimum of supervision. This position summary contains the most relevant duties and responsibilities and does not exclude other assignments not mentioned.

Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. 3 years’ experience in Histopathology laboratory

2. Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.

EDUCATION / LICENSURE:
1. Associate degree in applied clinical science with a course in Histology or an equivalent of training and experience is required.

2. Certification as Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists required.
