What are the responsibilities and job description for the Architectural Designer position at Stewart Knowles Construction, Inc.?
Stewart Knowles Construction is hiring a full-time Architectural Draftsman in Lebanon, TN. We build custom homes and high-end renovations across Middle Tennessee, and we need a skilled drafter to produce the construction-ready plans behind both our renovation and new-build work.
This is a hands-on, in-office drafting role. About 70% of your time will be designing remodel and addition plans for renovation customers, and the other 30% will be new house plans for our custom-build clients and spec homes. You'll also sit in on client design meetings, so strong drafting skill is paired with a professional, client-ready presence.
How your time breaks down
- 70% — Remodels and additions: renovation plans for existing homes, including additions, layout changes, kitchens, baths, and whole-home remodels.
- 30% — New construction: new house plans for custom-build clients and spec homes, from concept through permit-ready drawings.
What you'll do
- Draft remodel and addition plans for renovation customers — floor plans, elevations, sections, and details contractors can build from.
- Produce new home plans for custom-build and spec projects, from concept layouts through construction documents.
- Field-measure existing homes and document accurate as-built conditions.
- Participate in client design meetings to capture requirements and turn ideas into workable plans.
- Develop construction documents in AutoCAD and Revit, keeping clean, consistent, code-conscious drawing sets.
- Coordinate with builders and trades to keep plans constructible and resolve questions during the build.
- Revise and refine plans through client feedback and design review cycles.
- Prepare drawing sets that meet local code and permitting requirements.
What you bring (required)
- 3–6 years of residential architectural drafting experience.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (BIM).
- Strong working knowledge of residential construction methods and building code.
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce complete construction document sets.
- Comfortable taking field measurements and documenting as-built conditions.
- Professional communication skills for direct client interaction.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to juggle multiple projects.
Nice to have
- Associate degree or certificate in drafting, architectural technology, or a related field.
- Experience with custom or high-end residential work.
- Familiarity with Middle Tennessee permitting and inspection processes.
- 3D visualization skills to support client presentations.
What we offer
- ($90,000–$120,000/year).
- A steady, varied pipeline of remodel and new-construction work.
- A collaborative, in-office team close to active job sites.
- Direct involvement in projects from first sketch to finished home.
