What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Service Technician - Street Sweepers position at Stewart-Amos Equipment Co.?
Overview
Stewart-Amos Equipment Co. builds mechanical broom and regenerative air street sweepers in Harrisburg and supports them in the field. We're hiring a Field Service Technician who can show up at a customer's site alone, find the problem, fix it right, and leave the customer confident in the machine and in us.
No sweeper experience required. If you can troubleshoot hydraulics and 12V/24V electrical on heavy equipment, trucks, or similar machinery, we'll teach you our equipment.
What you'll do
- Diagnose and repair our sweepers at customer sites: hydraulic, electrical, auxiliary engine, and mechanical systems
- Perform warranty inspections and document failures (photos, findings, parts) so claims are handled correctly
- Deliver new sweepers and lead the handoff: walkaround, operator instruction, and maintenance training for the customer's mechanics
- Support sales demos and customer training sessions
- In our shop: service work, rebuilds, and pre-delivery inspections.
- Fill in on the production line during vacations, absences, and busy stretches
- Document your work on a phone or tablet the same day: time, parts, findings, next steps
What to expect for travel
Field work comes first in this role. Shop and production work fill the rest of the week.
- Overnight trips: With our current workload, plan on up to two nights away per week (rarely more). Historically it has been far less, but we'd rather set the expectation high than surprise you.
- Day trips: Regular regional trips to customer sites.
- Shop days: At our Harrisburg facility.
Lodging and travel expenses are company-paid.
A busy week might look like this
Monday in the shop finishing a sweeper repair or rebuild. Tuesday and Wednesday in the New York City area working through repairs for a fleet customer. Thursday delivering a new sweeper and training the customer's operators. Friday back in the shop helping the build team get a unit out the door.
What you need
- Class B CDL or higher
- Age 21 or older (federal DOT requirement for interstate driving) and a driving record that meets our insurance requirements
- Hands-on experience diagnosing hydraulic and 12V/24V electrical systems on heavy equipment, trucks, or similar machinery. You can read a schematic and work with a multimeter and pressure gauges.
- Confidence working alone. You make sound calls without someone over your shoulder, and you know when to pick up the phone.
- Professional, respectful communication with operators, mechanics, fleet managers, and public works officials
- Comfort documenting work on a phone or tablet
- Willingness to travel overnight as described above
- Your own set of professional hand tools. We supply specialty and diagnostic tools.
Nice to have
- Street sweeper experience, mechanical broom or regenerative air (any brand)
- Field service experience
- Experience with refuse trucks, vacuum or sewer jetter trucks, municipal fleets, construction or ag equipment, or military vehicles
- Diesel engine diagnosis and troubleshooting, especially Kubota
- Welding and fabrication for field repairs
- Class A CDL; ASE, IFPS, or OEM certifications
The conditions
Sweepers are dirty equipment. Field work happens in customer yards and facilities, in all weather. Expect to lift up to 50 lbs, climb on and work under equipment, and spend long stretches behind the wheel on travel days. Our shop is heated in winter, not air-conditioned.
