Summary:
This is a full-time 9 month, open rank, campus-based faculty position in the School of Design, Arts, and Communication's Department of Communication with responsibilities for teaching face-to-face undergraduate Business Communication and Communication Studies courses. Course assignments may include teaching introductory communication courses such as Public Speaking, Human Communication, Intercultural Communication, Communication Theory, and Communication Ethics, and courses within the successful candidate's disciplinary area of expertise. Teaching responsibilities include 24-30 contact hours per academic year, commensurate with rank. The full-time faculty member fulfills all responsibilities of the rank as described in Stevenson University policies and the School of Design, Arts, and Communications full-time faculty job description.

Education/Experience:
Doctorate in Communication or related discipline required for the rank of Assistant Professor or higher; Masters degree in Communication or related discipline required for the rank of Lecturer. Minimum of three years of teaching experience at the college level preferred and professional applied communication experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Proficient in both theoretical and applied areas of communication.
  • Ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities in major and general education communication courses.
  • Proven record of integrating contemporary technology and communication methods in the classroom.
  • Proven ability to develop effective course materials including syllabi, lessons, demonstrations, lectures, and workshops
  • Demonstrated interest in engaging students in experiential learning and/or other high-impact practices, in building student programs, and actively supporting students academic and career success.
  • Interest in engaging students and community members, including prospective employers or partners outside the classroom.
  • Demonstrated engagement with contemporary research and professional practice in Communication field and industry.
  • Ability to effectively teach and advise students with diverse backgrounds and interests.
  • Ability to practice inclusive pedagogy and to create inclusive learning experiences that will help students to develop professionally, intellectually, and socially.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Excellent communication, organization, time management and planning skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent technology skills and experience working with Blackboard or a similar platform.
  • Familiarity with educational assessment practices.
  • Student-centered approach to teaching and a commitment to student achievement.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a team of faculty sharing time, ideas, equipment, resources, and space.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, service, and the application of technology in the classroom, and in daily activities.
  • Ability to travel between campuses.
  • Ability to teach evening courses as needed.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position may require sitting for long periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.

Essential Functions:
  • Engage in instructional activity totaling 24-30 credit/contact hours per academic year as assigned.
  • Teaching responsibilities include time spent in face-to-face or online courses and in immediate preparation for courses; maintaining and improving competence in subjects taught, preparing teaching materials and online course management sites; reviewing and selecting textbooks; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; reviewing projects and papers; evaluating assignments and examinations or presentations; supervising independent study or Capstone projects; and submitting grades. Professional peer review is an essential feature of effective teaching. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system.
  • Faculty responsibilities include writing syllabi, reading and responding to emails, submitting midterm and final grades on time, providing effective and timely feedback on assignments, grading course work, and alerting appropriate university personnel to student progress interruptions on a timely basis using University reporting systems and processes.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise teaching methods, curricula, and materials regularly to reflect latest developments in the field and respond to students needs.
  • Design and implement learner-centered instructional activities and assessment plans and processes.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the program, School, and University.
  • Learn, understand, and effectively articulate the differences between the Business Communication and Communication Studies programs within the department.
  • Conduct student advising activities including holding regular office hours, and providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding personal, academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters.
  • Attend all University Faculty, Faculty/Staff meetings, and relevant academic Department/School meetings.
  • Engage in service, which means actively participating the life and work of the department, school, and university including, but not limited to: attending department meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental events; and participating in shared governance and university committees.
  • Engage in research/scholarship and continuing professional development related to the Communication discipline, profession, and pedagogy.
  • Respond to student feedback for each course and complete training or professional development as required by the University.
  • Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. Follow all faculty and program policies outlined by the School and the University.
