ABOUT STEVENS FAMILY LAW, LLC

If you are a skilled family law attorney who wants to do more with it — more complex cases, more interesting work, a firm where you are genuinely supported — this posting is worth reading carefully.

Stevens Family Law is a well-established South Carolina boutique focused exclusively on complex family law. The firm is widely known and respected across the state — by attorneys and judges alike — for handling high-stakes, sophisticated matters with the attention and skill those cases require.

We are intentionally not a high-volume practice. Our attorneys carry a manageable caseload of meaningful cases: high-asset divorce, contested custody, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and statewide Family Court litigation across all 46 South Carolina counties. We take fewer cases so we can do each one well. Our attorneys are not expected to carry 75-100 matters or bill 2,500 hours. That is a conscious choice, not a limitation.

We also take seriously what it means to support our attorneys. We have an experienced support staff in place so our attorneys can focus on practicing law. We cover bar dues, CLE, and provide access to training that most SC family law attorneys cannot access regardless of their experience level. And while we are serious about the quality of our work, we are not a stuffy firm — this is a collaborative, collegial place where people genuinely enjoy working together.

Built over 30 years of practice, the firm's reputation and referral network are well-established, statewide and nationally — the foundation is solid and the opportunity is real. We are ready to bring on the right attorney to do great work alongside us and be part of what comes next.

WHAT SETS THIS OPPORTUNITY APART

✓ Manageable caseload — quality work, not volume. No 75-100 case dockets or 2,500-hour expectations.

✓ Experienced support staff: paralegal, legal assistants, receptionist, etc. You practice law; they handle the rest.

✓ Collaborative, collegial team environment — attorneys work closely together, not in isolation.

✓ Firm is well-regarded across South Carolina by the attorneys and judges who matter most in family law.

✓ Access to AAML training programs unavailable at most firms, which are open only to attorneys who work with AAML Fellows.

✓ Cases referred by top family law attorneys from across the country — genuinely complex, high-stakes matters.

✓ Statewide practice across all 46 SC counties, including international family law matters.

✓ Clear growth path: your own caseload first, then deeper collaboration on the most complex matters as trust and experience build.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a full-time, in-office position based at our Spartanburg, SC office. Attorneys work together in the office on a daily basis when not in court or at client appointments — the collaborative, team-oriented nature of the firm is part of what makes us work so well together, so remote or hybrid arrangements are not available for this role.

The role has two components. First, you will manage your own caseload of family law matters — cases you handle with guidance from firm leadership available whenever you want it. Second, as we get to know your abilities and you become familiar with how we work, you will collaborate on the firm's more complex and high-profile referral matters alongside our founder.

We are ideally looking for someone with 5 or more years of SC family law experience who can step in and handle their own cases from day one. We want someone who has been in Family Court, handled contested cases, and knows how to manage clients through difficult situations with professionalism. You will not be left to figure things out alone — but you should be ready and comfortable practicing independently.

Over time, as you demonstrate your abilities and judgment, the expectation is that you take on increasingly sophisticated matters. The ceiling here is genuinely high.

RESPONSIBILITIES

•      Manage your own caseload of SC family law matters independently, with firm support as needed

•      Handle contested child custody, visitation, relocation, and modification litigation in SC Family Court

•      Opportunity to represent clients in high-asset divorce, equitable distribution, and complex property proceedings

•      Manage discovery in complex cases including financial records, business valuations, and expert witnesses

•      Appear independently in hearings, temporary hearings, contested trials, and mediations across South Carolina

•      Advise clients on equitable division, child custody and support, alimony, contempt, and post-decree matters

•      Collaborate with our founder on high-complexity and high-profile matters as appropriate

•      Work closely with a full support staff team in a collegial office environment

QUALIFICATIONS

•      J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school

•      Active, good-standing membership in the South Carolina Bar

•      5 years of South Carolina family law experience strongly preferred; candidates with 3–4 years of demonstrated courtroom experience will be considered — compensation reflects years of experience and will be discussed accordingly

•      Demonstrated history of independent Family Court appearances — hearings, temporary hearings, contested trials, mediations

•      Experience with financially complex divorce matters (high-asset, business interests, executive compensation) preferred

•      Strong communication, written advocacy, and oral argument skills

•      Able to manage a caseload professionally and communicate proactively with clients

•      Collaborative by nature and comfortable working as part of a close-knit team

•      Genuine interest in growing as a family law litigator and handling increasingly sophisticated matters

•      Ability to handle matters statewide as cases require

•      Must be able to work in-office in Spartanburg, SC on a daily basis when not in court

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

•      Base Salary $100,000–$120,000 commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonuses

•      401(k) with employer match

•      Health, dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance

•      Malpractice / professional liability insurance fully covered by the firm

•      Full support staff: paralegal, legal assistants, receptionist, etc.

•      CLE expenses covered for approved programs, including access to AAML training programs that are only available to attorneys at firms with AAML Fellows

•      SC Bar dues and professional organization fees covered

•      Collaborative, collegial work environment — a team that genuinely enjoys working together

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

You are an experienced family law attorney who has built real courtroom skills and is ready to do more with them. You can handle your own cases and manage your own clients — you do not need hand-holding — but you also value working alongside a team that has handled some of the most complex family law cases in South Carolina and can offer real advice and insight when it matters.

You want to be part of a firm people respect, work on cases that are interesting, and come into an office where you enjoy the people you work with. If that sounds like the right fit, we should talk.
