Primary Purpose
The Public Safety Captain is a visible and trusted leader responsible for the daily oversight and coordination of campus safety operations at Stetson University College of Law. As second-in-command to the Chief of Public Safety, the Captain plays a key leadership role in ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and guests. This position combines strategic planning, supervisory responsibility, and direct community engagement to support a holistic model of campus safety. In partnership with the Chief, the Captain fosters a service-oriented safety culture, leads response coordination, oversees officer performance and training, and ensures the effective use of campus security systems and procedures. The Captain serves as a first-line decision maker in both emergency and routine scenarios, and builds meaningful relationships across campus to strengthen trust, preparedness, and collaboration. As a key member of the Public Safety team, the Captain works in alignment with Stetson’s Strategic Priorities to foster a secure and supportive campus community.

Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Serve as acting supervisor in the absence of the Chief, providing daily leadership to Public Safety personnel and ensuring operational readiness across all shifts.
- Maintain oversight of campus patrols, officer coverage, dispatch, and response coordination for incidents, service calls, and emergencies.
- Lead daily briefings, communicate updates, and manage pass-down of key operational information between shifts.
- Partner with the Chief to review and update safety policies, procedures, and emergency protocols to align with institutional goals and industry best practices.
- Assist in developing and implementing department-wide strategies to support community safety, threat assessment, and campus preparedness.
- Foster positive, service-focused relationships with students, faculty, and staff to build a culture of mutual respect, accountability, and safety.
- Actively engage in campus life by attending community events, meetings, and student programs as a visible ambassador for the department.
- Respond to inquiries, concerns, and reports from the community with professionalism, discretion, and care.
- Provide safety escorts, support during student crises, and facilitate referrals to appropriate resources when needed.
- Provide direct supervision to officers and support staff, including performance management, scheduling, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Lead officer onboarding and field training efforts to ensure consistent standards and institutional knowledge transfer.
- Identify training needs and coordinate ongoing professional development in areas such as de-escalation, emergency response, CPR/AED, and community policing.
- Review officer reports and documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Monitor and manage campus security systems, including video surveillance, access control, alarm systems, and radios.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and incident reports in accordance with university policies and legal standards.
- Coordinate with Facilities and IT to address safety infrastructure needs, such as lighting, locks, phones, and alarm functionality.
- Assist with inventory and distribution of keys, access cards, IDs, and other departmental equipment.
- Act as an incident commander or key response lead during emergencies, coordinating actions with campus leadership and external agencies as appropriate.
- Participate in emergency drills, after-action reviews, and campus-wide preparedness planning.
- Support the Chief in compliance efforts related to Clery Act reporting, campus safety communications, and record retention.
