The Paralegal is responsible for a variety of tasks to support attorneys, including maintaining and organizing files, ensuring document regulatory compliance, and preparing documents. At Stern & Eisenberg, Paralegals typically specialize in a single field of law such as litigation, loss mitigation and mediation. This role is focused on secured creditors rights with an emphasis on default related actions such as foreclosure, bankruptcy, and related litigation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Attorney Support
- Prepares attorneys for depositions, mediations hearings, trials and arbitrations, as necessary.
- Monitors and tracks attorney’s caseload and stage of each file.
- Manages Associate calendar and court deadlines.
- Performs and monitors standard electronic discover processing and litigation functions.
- E-files with courts and agencies.
- Assists with preparation of court filings, including but not limited to, fact checking legal briefs and assembling of exhibits and appendices.
- Attends court, as needed.
- Updates the internal case management system (CaseAware) and complete assigned steps
- Utilizes and updates client portals as needed, to reflect all client activities and filings.
Calendars and Deadlines
- Ensures proper calendaring of appearances, hearings, mediations, sales and other important events.
- Ensures deadlines are met.
- Prepares attorney document reviews.
- Schedules and coordinates hearings, mediations, depositions, etc.
- Follows up on unfulfilled requests.
- Ensures timely follow up with clients, opposing counsel and third parties.
Document Preparation, Filing and Tracking
- Requests original documents, judgment figures, etc., from clients and other third parties.
- Completes file opening procedures, including electronic filing of pleadings.
- Prepares motions, letters and affidavits.
- Files all court documents.
- Prepares pleadings, discovery, subpoenas, affidavits and other litigation support documents.
- Researches various county / state regulations to ensure compliance.
- Reviews final documents before being sent for execution.
Communications and Liaison
- Communicates all events and developments to clients using multiple client systems and email (as well as fax and mail as appropriate).
- When necessary, serves as liaison between clients, opposing counsel, courts and other third parties.
- Elevates issues to supervisor in a timely manner.
Billings, Fees and Administration
- Send fee requests, hourly billings; prepare checks etc. and maintains all related records.
- Maintains client and all other attorney files.
- Distributes mail and electronic correspondence.
- Prepares settlement distributions and allocations.
Other Tasks, Duties and Projects as Assigned
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent; some college or certification preferred.
- Experience with mortgage default actions preferred
- Paralegal certification from accredited school or at least 5 year’s legal support experience.
- Minimum of one year in a law firm, with prior experience in Litigation.
- Must be able to work independently, prioritize numerous and detailed tasks in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining focus on excellent delivery.
- Ability to work independently and follow through.
- Ability to delegate as appropriate.
- High attention to detail.
- Possess a sense of urgency and a meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain positive internal working relationships with office staff.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills to communicate with attorneys, staff and clients.

- Must have strong computer skills; Word, Excel and Outlook as well as general understanding of software systems to access and utilize client systems.
