Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham client with its search for a Medical Billing/Coding Specialist. We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Medical Billing and Coding Specialist to join our healthcare team. This role is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and accurately coding medical records and patient information using standardized coding systems. You will also prepare and submit medical claims to insurance companies and ensure proper reimbursement for healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review patient charts and records to assign accurate diagnostic (ICD-10), procedural (CPT), and supply (HCPCS) codes.
- Ensure codes are used correctly during the billing process, including documentation and insurance claims.
- Verify insurance benefits and obtain pre-authorizations when required.
- Submit claims to insurance companies electronically or via paper if needed.
- Follow up on unpaid claims and resolve denials or rejections.
- Communicate with healthcare providers for clarification on diagnoses or procedures.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines and insurance requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations including HIPAA and billing standards.
- Perform regular audits to ensure coding accuracy and prevent claim denials.
- Manage patient billing inquiries and resolve any billing-related issues.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in medical billing and/or coding.
