Lifeguard / Camp CounselorStepping Forward Summer Camp – Special Needs Program Yorba Linda, CaliforniaPosition OverviewStepping Forward Summer Camp is seeking responsible, energetic, and compassionate Lifeguard / Camp Counselors to support children and teens with special needs in a structured, supportive summer camp environment. This role combines aquatic safety supervision with active camp counseling, helping campers participate safely in swimming and recreational activities while promoting confidence, social connection, and emotional well-being.The ideal candidate is safety-focused, patient, adaptable, and enjoys working with children and adolescents with diverse developmental, behavioral, and emotional needs.Paid training is provided, including camp orientation, safety procedures, and support strategies for working with children with behavioral or emotional needs. We are also willing to cover or reimburse the cost of lifeguard certification training for qualified candidates.Key ResponsibilitiesAquatic SafetyMonitor campers in the pool and aquatic environments to ensure safety at all times.Enforce pool safety rules and camp policies.Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies or unsafe situations.Perform water rescues and administer first aid/CPR when necessary.Conduct swim safety checks and supervise campers with varying swimming abilities.Maintain lifeguard certifications and follow all aquatic safety protocols.Camp CounselingSupervise and engage campers throughout the day during camp activities.Support campers with emotional regulation, social interaction, and participation in activities.Assist campers with transitions between activities and locations.Promote inclusion, teamwork, and positive behavior.Provide encouragement and support to campers who may need additional assistance.Work closely with clinical staff and camp leadership to ensure camper safety and well-being.Activity ParticipationParticipate in outdoor activities, sports, games, and recreational programming.Help lead group activities, including swimming, field trips, and team games.Ensure campers follow safety guidelines during all camp activities.Communication & DocumentationCommunicate with supervisors regarding camper needs, concerns, or incidents.Complete incident reports when required.Collaborate with fellow counselors and staff to maintain a positive camp environment.QualificationsCurrent Lifeguard Certification (Red Cross or equivalent).CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred (training opportunities available).Experience working with children, teens, or individuals with special needs preferred.Strong communication and teamwork skills.Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations.Comfortable participating in water activities and supervising campers in the pool.Training & DevelopmentStepping Forward provides paid staff training, which may include:Lifeguard certification or recertificationCPR / First Aid trainingBehavioral support strategiesSafety and crisis response proceduresCamp programming and activity leadershipPreferred ExperienceBackground in psychology, education, social work, recreation, or related fieldsExperience with autism spectrum, ADHD, anxiety, or behavioral supportPrevious experience as a camp counselor, swim instructor, behavioral technician, or aideWork EnvironmentStepping Forward Summer Camp provides a structured, supportive environment for children and teens receiving mental health support.
