What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at Stephan P. McMahon & Company?
SPM & Co · A Position Profile — not a job description
Set the standard.
We exist to elevate entrepreneurs. Through forward-focused partnership we sharpen their decisions, clarify their direction, and help them build businesses that create freedom and a bigger future — the way the entrepreneurial journey was meant to feel. Behind every one of those decisions is technical work that has to be right. That's where you come in — you own it, and you set the bar the rest of the team works to.
What we do
We're a forward-focused business and tax advisory firm. We work with entrepreneurs and business owners as a true partner — seeking transformational results that expand well beyond transactional services; helping them see what actually drives their business, keep more of what they earn, and build something that grows in value.
Of everything we do, the experience we create is what we care about most, and the critical component of that is how we make our clients feel — heard and understood, connected and confident — with a partner by their side.
Why this seat exists
Our clients trust us with the real picture of their business — and that trust is only as solid as the work underneath it. Returns, books, work papers, research: it has to be right, on time, and clear enough to build real advice on. That's the foundation everything else is built on.
You're the technical anchor for a dedicated group of clients — you make sure the work is sound, and since the advice we give sits on that work, you make the advice sound too. You also grow the people beside you: every review, every bit of teaching adds to what an associate can do — and stronger work today means stronger work downstream, and a better outcome for the client. Do it well, and it compounds.
What you'll own — outcomes, not tasks
- The work is right. Returns, books, and work papers are accurate and clean — on time, as promised, every time — the kind of work that holds up and needs no second-guessing.
- The team gets sharper. You review associates' work and coach as you go — raising the level, so good people become great ones.
- Strategy starts on solid ground. You turn raw client data into a clear, reliable picture of the business — so when we sit down to guide the client, we're working from truth, not a scramble.
- Clients feel the competence. On the technical side they deal with someone who knows their file, answers clearly, and leaves them confident the details are handled.
Who thrives here — a mirror, not a wish list
This is an entrepreneurial seat, not a corporate one:
- You own the outcome — you don't hand off half-done work; you see it through until it's right.
- You're technically sharp — CPA or EA, or actively on the path, and you genuinely know your craft.
- You care how it feels, not just how it adds up — getting the numbers right is the baseline, and the client should come away confident and well looked after.
- You're still growing — you'd rather learn a better way than defend an old habit.
- You lift the people around you — associates get better working alongside you, picking up the standard and the judgment behind it.
- You take pride in the work — how it's done matters, not just that it's done.
- You make the technical land — you turn a complex tax or accounting matter into something an owner can actually act on.
- You put the firm first, even when it's stacked — when the deadlines pile up, you still make the call that's right for the client and the firm, not just the fastest way off your plate.
What we run on
Five values. Not a poster — it's how we hire, coach, and work together towards success:
— The experience is the #1 thing.
— How we do anything is how we do everything.
— Grow or die.
— Lead with ownership — own the outcome.
— Build what matters.
Full-time, on Cape Cod. After an in-office training period, it's a hybrid schedule — in the office Monday through Thursday; remote Friday. Being in the room with the team — where the work gets reviewed and associates learn — is part of the job.
