Purpose of Position:
The role of the Step Up Louisiana Greater Baton Rouge Parent Union Organizer will be to organize with parents across the city and parish, and to coordinate the labor, faith, and community organizing work in Baton Rouge for Step Up’s education justice campaigns.

Our members “Step Up” and go beyond voting to campaign, organize from a racial justice perspective, and hold political and community leaders accountable. We work in our own neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces to disrupt systemic oppression. We build the people-power needed to win in our city and state.
Step Up Louisiana is affiliated with the Center for Popular Democracy, which has more than 50 affiliate organizations around the United States who work to create equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy. We are also affiliated with the Journey for Justice Alliance, a Black-led alliance of grassroots community, youth, and parent-led organizations in 30 cities across the country organizing to win community-driven alternatives to the privatization of and dismantling of public school systems.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To conduct broad and intensive outreach efforts to parents, teachers, clergy, and community activists by:
- Building one-on-one relationships.
- Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns.
- School visits and walk throughs
- Recruiting active dues-paying members who align with our values and who are active in our campaigns.
- Training member-leaders
- Participating in local GOTV and civic engagement efforts
- Developing member-leadership through a defined leadership ladder program
- Educating the membership about our core issues
- Supporting other statewide activity of the organization
- Facilitating individual/group meetings to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
- Motivating individuals and groups of community leaders to take action.
- Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns.
- Working with our members to develop strategies for how to win our campaigns
- Mobilizing parents and community members to advocate for sustainable community schools
- Expanding the Louisiana Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools (LAROS) coalition by building partnerships with community organizations, direct service providers, faith leaders, and labor unions
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least 2 years of organizing experience in labor, community, faith, student or political organizations or campaigns
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing)
- Excellent problem solving and leadership skills
- Commitment to the social justice movement and passion for winning change with parents, teachers and community members
- Ability to organize community members to take action on multiple issues for local neighborhood campaigns as well as city and statewide campaigns
- Ability to work independently and manage a volunteer team
- Ability to team build
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and be detail-oriented
- Ability to fund raise and sign up members for Step Up Louisiana
- Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others.
- Ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Willingness to conduct house visits and work site visits.
- Willingness to travel for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Possession of basic map navigation skills a plus.
- Computer literacy skills preferred, by communicating effectively through emails, drafting documents with software such as, Google suite.
- Must be comfortable driving with members
- Must have reliable means of transportation, driver’s license and car insurance
- Must have access to a laptop/computer
Physical Requirements:
The position is based in Baton Rouge, LA. Work is generally performed from a field office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position. Long and extended hours and overnight travel may be required.
