JOB DESCRIPTION

The Cytogenetic Technologist is a mid to entry-level position responsible for performing routine cytogenetic procedures under supervision. This role involves processing live and cryopreserved cell lines (human and non-human iPSCs, ESCs, tumor-derived) for chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and related techniques to aid in the assessment of genetic integrity and genomic characterization. The technologist ensures accurate, timely, and high-quality results while adhering to laboratory protocols, safety standards, and good laboratory practice (GLP).

This position is ideal for individuals with foundational knowledge in cytogenetics seeking hands-on experience in a quality testing R&D lab setting.

Key Responsibilities

•  Specimen Processing and Culture: Receive, log, and prepare specimens. Initiate and maintain cell cultures (e.g., cryopreserved cells, live/active cultures) using sterile techniques. Perform harvests, feeds and subcultures as needed.

•  Slide Preparation and Staining: Harvest cells, prepare slides, and apply banding techniques (e.g., G-banding). Monitor and adjust for quality.

•  Microscopic Analysis: Perform microscopic examination of chromosomes, identify numerical and structural abnormalities, and prepare karyotypes using image capture and karyotyping software (Leica CytoVision or similar).

•  FISH and Advanced Techniques: Assist with or perform FISH processing, hybridization, washing, and analysis (metaphase/interphase) under supervision.

•  Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document procedures, results, and quality control. Use International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN). Generate preliminary reports for review by a cytogeneticist. Maintain records for traceability and compliance.

•  Quality Assurance: Participate in daily QA/QC, reagent checks, equipment maintenance, and proficiency testing. Troubleshoot basic technical issues and refer complex problems to senior staff.

•  Safety and Compliance: Follow universal precautions, biosafety protocols, and laboratory policies. Participate in inspections and continuing education.

•  Additional Duties: Assist with inventory, orientation of new staff, and implementation of new methodologies as assigned.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Science, Genetics, or a related field (or equivalent with sufficient science coursework).

Certification/Licensure:

• Eligible for or holds certification as Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG(ASCP)) or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

• 1–3 years of cytogenetics laboratory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong understanding of human chromosomes, cytogenetic techniques, and common abnormalities associated with genetic disorders and neoplasms.

• Excellent manual dexterity, pattern recognition, attention to detail, and visual acuity for microscopic work.

• Ability to work independently with guidance, manage multiple tasks, and meet strict turnaround times.

• Proficient computer skills (laboratory information systems, karyotyping software, Microsoft Office).

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with team members and managers.

• Commitment to quality, safety, and ethical standards in a high-complexity lab environment.

Physical and Work Environment:

• Ability to stand for extended periods, handle biohazardous materials, and lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.

• Exposure to laboratory chemicals, specimens, and moderate noise levels. Use of PPE required.

• Some weekend/holiday rotation possible.
