Hiring Range: $29.32-$35.01/hour

Position Objective 
To provide the maintenance and repair of County vehicles. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and servicing complex mechanical, electronic, air, hydraulic and computer systems in county vehicles and equipment, as well as cutting and welding on machinery and equipment, designing and fabricating new parts and tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  
These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification.

1. Performs mechanical repair, including adjustments and parts replacement on power drive, brakes, steering, electrical, cooling and related systems on light and heavy equipment to ensure safe and proper operation.
2. Performs inspections and diagnostic work on light and heavy equipment including computerized engine and brake systems to maintain the fleet in good working order.
3. Performs annual DOT inspections on heavy duty trucks and trailers and completes identified repairs to maintain certifications.
4. Cuts and welds machinery and equipment to ensure the safe and proper working condition of all equipment.
5. Performs flat, vertical, and horizontal welding, brazing and soldering. Prepares and coats repairs as needed to protect repairs.
6. Performs maintenance welding and cutting repairs.
7. Performs diagnoses and services air conditioning systems.
8. Performs repairs, adjustments and parts replacement on complex hydraulic systems including electric hydraulic valves and computerized sanding controls.
9. Requisitions parts and supplies to prevent work delays due to unavailability.
10. Prepares new fleet for service and provides input into new equipment specifications. Prepares vehicles and equipment for sale or trade.
11. Responds to emergency calls in the field.
12. Operates light and moderately heavy equipment including trucks for snow plowing and applying ice control materials to County roads, materials hauling and right of way repair and maintenance in an effort to maintain safe roadways.
13. Provides input on existing equipment issues, budget considerations and purchases to assist in cost-effective and efficient operations.
14. Documents work activities, performs computer data entry and utilizes computer databases.
15. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
16. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent. 

Minimum Qualifications
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Two years post-secondary formal education in automotive or heavy equipment repair or welding certification and five years related experience in maintenance, repair and operation of truck, automotive, heavy equipment, highway equipment, or welding OR nine years of related experience in maintenance, repair and operation of truck, automotive, heavy equipment, highway equipment or welding
  • Must possess valid Minnesota Class A CDL Driver's License
  • EPA Section 609 Certification for air conditioning system repair required within 12 months of start date
  • DOT Certification required within 12 months of start date

Preferred Experience Beyond Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working with diagnostic software and equipment, including Mack, Allison and John Deere

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of practices, methods, tools and materials used in maintenance and repair of automotive, construction and related equipment, including Mack, Allison and John Deere.
2. Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the welder's trade.
3. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and welding.
4. Knowledge of road maintenance equipment including its functionality, operations, and safety features
5. Ability to work from diagrams, manuals, oral and written directions
6. Ability to make cost estimates of repair time and materials
7. Ability to use a personal computer to complete records and access databases
8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions
9.  Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 75% of the time indoors and approximately 25% of the time outdoors. Will have some exposure to health hazards, extreme temperatures, and accidents. Extent of Supervision or Guidance Provided
Work is performed under the general supervision of Equipment Fleet Manager.

Responsibility for Public Contact
Minimal.

Hours of Work
The hours for this position are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer hours: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday (starting the week prior to Memorial Day through Labor Day); may include some hours outside of normal work hours on occasion.
