Title: Learning Specialist (Reading Interventionist)
Full-time, year-round
Salary: $52,000-$59,000 DOQ

Job Description
As a Learning Specialist at Steamboat Reading, you’ll play a vital role in helping students from kindergarten through high school develop the foundational reading skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. Through a structured literacy approach, you’ll provide at least 20 hours of one-on-one instruction each week, meeting students where they are and guiding them toward grade-level proficiency and renewed confidence. If you have the experience and interest, you may also contribute to professional development for other tutors and support community outreach efforts that empower families and raise awareness about early literacy and dyslexia.
Primary Responsibilities
- 20-25 hours of tutoring interventions with students scheduled a week
- Monday through Friday
- Hours during the school day vary
- Mon.-Thurs. after school hours
- Individualized lesson planning
- Regular progress monitoring with normed assessments
- Weekly communication and support for students’ parents
- Monthly updates to the program director
Additional Responsibilities (if qualified)
- Support for other tutors (shared with the Program Director)
- Book/article discussion groups
- Community outreach (shared with the Executive Director & Program Manager)
- Max of one activity a month
- Beginning Reading workshop for parents
- Facilitate Dyslexia Simulations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (education field preferred)
- Reading intervention training and experience
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to relate to a diverse population
- Highly organized with attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster strong relationships with students, parents, and staff members
- Personal qualities of integrity, confidentiality, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for Steamboat Reading’s mission
Preferred Qualifications
- Training in basic and advanced levels of the Orton-Gillingham approach
- Experience using Orton-Gillingham for reading intervention with students in a one-on-one or small group setting
- Strong understanding of how children learn to read and spell
- Proficient in using technology, including Google Suite and other software
Desirable Qualifications
- Certification from ALTA, IMSE, AOGPE, DTI, or similar organization
- Experience providing intervention for writing and/or math
- Special Education Degree
- Understanding of dyslexia, other learning disabilities, and/or ADHD
- Fluent in Spanish
