Clothing Department Sales Associate

Position Summary

All employees of Steamboat Ace Hardware are responsible for delivering an exceptional, customer-first shopping experience. Sales Associates engage with customers, understand their style and fit needs, and help them find the right clothing and accessories. Other responsibilities will include managing stock levels and inventory accuracy and maintaining the overall appearance and cleanliness in the store.

Physical Requirements

• Stand for extended periods (typically 2–4 hours uninterrupted, up to 8 hours per day)
• Move and handle boxes of merchandise, fold and restock clothing, and rearrange fixtures
• Frequently lift up to 15 pounds, occasionally lift 15–30 pounds
• Operate a cash register, tablet, or POS system
• Reach, bend, and climb a small step stool as needed

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Cashier experience in a similar position or proficiency in a similar task preferred
• Interest or experience in fashion, apparel, or retail is strongly desired
• Strong customer service skills and a friendly, approachable attitude
• Ability to use a computer, phone, tablet, and basic retail software
• Team player who works well with coworkers, managers, and customers
• Reliable, punctual, and consistent attendance required
• Must work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Follow dress code and store policies
• Willingness to learn all areas of the store (women’s, men’s, accessories, fitting rooms, etc.)
• Bilingual (Spanish) verbal and written skills highly desired

Essential Responsibilities

The essential responsibilities for this position include:

• Make customer service the #1 priority
• Greet every customer, ask about their needs, and offer styling or fit advice
• Provide a positive, helpful, and knowledgeable experience for every customer, every time
• Complete daily operational tasks assigned by management (e.g., restocking, folding, cleaning)
• Work with a sense of urgency while maintaining attention to detail
• Participate in discussions and share ideas for improvement
• Demonstrate the store’s sales and service process (e.g., greet, recommend, style, close, thank)
• Precisely and accurately handle money, checks, and other types of payment received for product sold including processing refunds and/or issuing in store merchandise credit to customers for returned merchandise
• Perform credit card transactions, manufacturer coupon redemption, personal check acceptance, vendor check-in transactions in accordance with company standards and policies and practices
• Address customer complaints in a positive manner and assist with simple complaints and concerns. Get a manager involved with problems as needed
• Follow company policies and procedures for all transactions

Core Services & Duties

The essential core services and duties for this position include:

• Verify the accuracy of the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift, and immediately notify your manager on duty of any inaccuracies
• Unpack and process incoming shipments, steam, fold, hang, and merchandise clothing
• Practice suggestive selling and build customer relations
• Be aware of sales goals and performance against those goals
• Review and adhere to all city, county, state, and federal laws affecting store operations.
• Engage the customer to ensure that they are receiving all the benefits of being an ACE Rewards member and actively seeking participation from them
• Review and adhere to store safety/emergency procedures – critical telephone numbers and incident reporting forms and protocol
• Perform regular cleaning of counter surfaces, store equipment, restrooms and other duties as assigned
• Participate in all store sales building, customer service, and team-building activities
• Actively participate in store communication and initiatives (e.g., Communication Board, store contests, etc.)
• Keep your assigned section clean, organized, and fully stocked
• Remove old sale signs and update price tags after promotions
• Restock fitting room items and return misplaced merchandise to proper areas
• Handle customer returns and exchanges according to store policy
• Never tell a customer "no" without first checking with a manager
• Be aware of loss prevention (e.g., watch fitting rooms, greet all customers to deter theft)
• When not helping a customer, stay visible on the sales floor and avoid personal conversations with coworkers
• Assist customers with simple concerns or product issues; involve a manager when needed
• Promote the store’s loyalty or rewards program and describe current sales or promotions
• Maintain awareness of weekly ads, new arrivals, and clearance events
• Use store communication tools (e.g., headset or radio) to coordinate with team members
• Offer customers a shopping basket or cart
• Help customers carry large or heavy bags to the register or exit if needed
• Must perform all duties within the store during regular store hours.

Work Environment

The work environment is typical for a retail clothing store. Associates may work near fitting rooms, stock areas, or sales floors. Noise level is generally low to moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
