What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Operations & Customer Success Lead position at Stealth Startup?
Tax & Customer Success • San Francisco (In-person) • Full-Time
Tax is a $100B industry, and the software professionals use to file business returns hasn’t fundamentally changed in decades. We’re building agentic AI that automates tax end to end: not a copilot, but an autonomous system that reasons over messy real-world data, plans multi-step processes, and executes them with expert-level accuracy. We started last year with a team out of Amazon’s AGI org, saw strong traction with early customers, and just closed a seed round backed by tier-1 investors.
We need a CPA who can do the work and shape the product. This role is part tax practitioner, part product voice, part client advocate, the person who ensures our AI system meets the standard that real tax professionals demand. You’ll file returns through our tax firm, pressure-test our product against real workflows, sit in product and design meetings to represent the practitioner’s perspective, and lead customer conversations that drive retention and trust. If you’ve ever wished the tools you use every day were built by someone who actually understood the work, this is your chance to be that person.
- Prepare and file 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, and 1120S returns for mid-market clients through our affiliated tax practice, maintaining hands-on expertise in the workflows our product automates
- Serve as the tax domain expert in product development: participate in design meetings, define workflow requirements, and validate that our AI handles real-world complexity, reclassifications, footnotes, multi-state apportionment, and edge cases
- Lead product QA testing cycles to ensure accuracy across entity types, return types, and data sources, flagging gaps before they reach customers
- Own customer onboarding and success: lead calls with accounting firms to drive adoption, answer technical questions about product functionality and tax treatment, and build the relationships that drive retention
- Translate customer feedback and practitioner pain points into actionable product improvements, working directly with engineering and design
- Create and maintain customer-facing documentation, training materials, and support resources grounded in real tax workflows
- Active CPA license (required)
- 4 years of experience in public accounting or tax practice, including at least 1 year of direct experience preparing and filing 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120S returns for mid-market businesses and individuals
- Working knowledge of partnership and corporate tax workflows: K-1 processing, basis calculations, multi-state filing, and the common pain points that slow practitioners down during busy season
- Strong client-facing communication skills, you can explain complex tax treatment clearly to a firm partner and walk a new user through product functionality with equal confidence
- Comfort in a fast-moving startup environment where your role spans compliance, product, and customer success simultaneously
- Experience with professional tax software platforms (CCH Axcess, Lacerte, GoSystem, UltraTax) and an opinion on what they get wrong
- Background in K-1 processing, including footnote handling, Box 20 Code Z, and cross-entity reconciliation
- Familiarity with tax workflow automation tools (SurePrep, Gruntworx, SafeSend) or accounting practice management software (Karbon, Canopy, TaxDome)
- Prior experience in a product, QA, or customer success role at a technology company, especially in tax tech or fintech
- Experience working with or at Top 100 accounting firms
