Part-Time Math Remediation Tutor

Position Summary

Staunton River High School is seeking a Part-Time Math Remediation Tutor to provide targeted academic support to students who need additional assistance in mathematics. This position will work approximately 20 hours per week and will focus primarily on helping students strengthen foundational math skills, close learning gaps, improve classroom performance, and prepare for Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments.

The tutor will work closely with math teachers, administration, and other instructional staff to identify students in need of additional support and provide focused remediation based on individual student needs and assessment data.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide individual and small-group math tutoring and remediation.
• Support students primarily in Algebra I and other foundational high school mathematics skills.
• Use SOL, benchmark, classroom, and other assessment data to identify specific skill deficits.
• Provide targeted instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and current classroom instruction.
• Reinforce concepts taught by classroom teachers using multiple instructional strategies.
• Assist students with prerequisite skills that may be preventing success in their current math courses.
• Work with math teachers to identify priority students and skills for remediation.
• Provide additional support to students preparing for Math SOL assessments and retesting opportunities.
• Maintain simple records of students served, skills addressed, attendance, and student progress.
• Communicate regularly with teachers and administration regarding student progress and areas of continued need.
• Help students develop confidence, persistence, and effective problem-solving strategies in mathematics.
• Maintain student confidentiality and follow all school and division policies and procedures.

Schedule

Approximately 20 hours per week, with the specific schedule developed in coordination with school administration to maximize support during times when students are available for remediation.

The position may include working with students during the instructional day, remediation periods, study/resource periods, or other designated intervention times.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of high school mathematics, particularly Algebra I.
• Experience teaching, tutoring, or providing academic intervention to secondary students.
• Ability to explain mathematical concepts in multiple ways and work effectively with students who have experienced difficulty in mathematics.
• Knowledge of Virginia Math SOL standards and assessments preferred.
• Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with classroom teachers and school staff.
• Teaching license or previous classroom experience preferred but not required, depending on division requirements.
