Position Summary

Museum Educators are dynamic teaching professionals who deliver engaging, hands-on educational experiences for children and families in a variety of settings. Educators lead programs at the Staten Island Children's Museum, in schools throughout New York City, and at community events, while also serving as lead counselors and educators for school break and summer camps. Museum Educators work independently, mentor Assistant Educators, ensure program readiness, and help maintain the high quality of the Museum's educational offerings while representing the Museum in the community.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently facilitate educational programs for children, families, and school groups.
• Lead educational programs at the Museum, in schools, and at community outreach events throughout New York City.
• Serve as a lead counselor and educator for school break camps, summer camps, and after-school programs.
• Transport, set up, maintain, and pack educational materials and supplies for off-site school programs, outreach events, and community engagements.
• Mentor Assistant Educators and help ensure all program materials are organized, prepared, and ready for use.
• Engage visitors through interactive, inquiry-based learning experiences in museum exhibits.
• Support exhibit interpretation and encourage meaningful visitor engagement.
• Participate in program evaluations and contribute ideas for improving educational programming.
• Represent the Museum professionally at outreach events, school partnerships, festivals, and community programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Museum Studies, Child Development, or a related field (or currently pursuing a degree).
• Minimum of two years of experience teaching or leading children's educational programs.
• Excellent public speaking, classroom management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively while also managing programs independently.
• Comfortable working with children of diverse ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
• Ability to lift and transport educational materials and supplies for off-site programming.
• Ability to travel throughout New York City to schools and community locations as needed.
• A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation are preferred. While many programs are accessible by public transportation, educators are occasionally responsible for transporting outreach materials and program supplies to off-site locations.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 30 pounds of educational materials, outreach supplies, and program equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while facilitating programs, camps, and outreach events.
• Ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, climb stairs, and move throughout exhibit spaces and classrooms.
• Ability to set up, break down, and transport program materials, tables, displays, and activity stations.
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions during camps, field programs, and community events.
• Ability to actively supervise children in classrooms, exhibit spaces, outdoor areas, and public settings while responding quickly to emergencies or changing situations.
• Ability to travel independently to schools, parks, libraries, and community locations throughout New York City.
