Introduction

The Legislative Reference Bureau provides legal and research services to the state legislature and is seeking an attorney to join our office. Position Summary

A legislative attorney has primary responsibility for drafting legislation and providing legal counsel. Attorneys work independently and manage a confidential workload that is completed in a nonpartisan manner. Duties include: 1) drafting legislation, including the state budget; 2) drafting legal memoranda; 3) attending meetings with legislators, legislative staff, and stakeholders; 4) staffing the Assembly and Senate floors when in session; and 5) conducting independent legal research for preparation of publications and in-house CLEs.

An LRB attorney is responsible for three to five drafting areas. The LRB is currently hiring for an attorney who will work in the areas of agriculture, primary and secondary education, health, higher education, or insurance, although attorney subject areas may change over time depending on individual interests and agency needs. Experience in any of the areas listed is not necessary to apply for this position.

An LRB attorney is a nonpartisan position that works closely with partisan elected officials and constitutional officers. Partisan political activity by the staff is not allowed, and appointments are made on a nonpartisan basis.

The anticipated start date for this position is the fall of 2026 but is negotiable.

Salary Information

The range for the starting salary begins at $82,000. This position is in the unclassified state service.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will possess effective written and oral communication skills; analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex legal and policy issues. Well qualified applicants will have demonstrated the ability to work in a demanding and challenging environment while providing a high level of expertise and counsel.
