The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute.

What We Are Looking For: We are looking for a new member to join our Division of Legal Services and Compliance. We're looking for someone who wants to work in a fast-paced environment and has experience in litigation matters.

Where We Are Located: This position is headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, WI. After an initial training period, this position currently allows the option to work remotely up to 5 days per week. All employees are generally expected to be headquartered and work within the State of Wisconsin. This position will be required to come into the office for training, meetings and/or operational needs. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary

Responsibilities

This attorney is responsible for managing a high-volume caseload. The position’s primary focus is to support the WI Board of Nursing by investigating complaints submitted against licensed professionals regulated by the WI Board of Nursing. The position assists licensed professionals in achieving compliance, negotiates stipulated resolutions of complaints, and commences formal disciplinary action against licensed professionals when stipulations are not possible. The attorney may work on supporting other Boards, or the Department, in a similar manner as needed. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Determine violations by analyzing allegations, evidence, and law.
  • Negotiate with respondents or their attorneys to obtain compliance or stipulated resolutions through formal orders.
  • Review informal complaints to analyze issues and determine if they are within the jurisdiction of the Department or regulatory authorities.
  • Establish the scope and direction of investigations and ensure that the investigations are proceeding in a timely, efficient, and fiscally responsible manner.
  • Research and prepare documents, including but not limited to pleadings, affidavits, motions, briefs, memoranda, and correspondence related to administrative proceedings.
  • Conduct discovery including depositions, drafting and responding to interrogatories, requests to admit, requests to produce and other discovery available under Wis. Stat. Ch. 804.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (09-75) with an annual salary of $93,350 -$123,198.40, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications

A minimum requirement is to have a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin at time of application deadline.

Qualified Applicants Will Have Experience With All The Following

  • Litigation training or experience (criminal, civil, administrative, or other).
  • Experience conducting legal research and making determinations based on legal research.

In addition to having all the above, well qualified applicants will have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Experience providing legal advice and interpretations to clients.
  • Experience drafting documents related to litigation (such as findings of fact, conclusions of law, proposed decisions, pleadings, motions, briefs, investigative reports, and discovery requests and responses).
  • Experience performing legal work with medical and related professions (such as medicine and surgery, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and mental health professionals).
