The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled and motivated Highway Maintenance Worker to join our team in Mansfield, WA! As a journey-level member of our regional maintenance team, you'll help keep Washington's highways safe, reliable, and open by performing a variety of highway and roadway maintenance activities that support the movement of people and commerce.


Working under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you'll operate a wide range of maintenance equipment and tools to inspect, maintain, and repair highways and highway infrastructure. You'll contribute to everything from routine roadway maintenance to emergency response efforts, ensuring transportation systems remain safe and functional in all conditions. This role also offers opportunities to demonstrate leadership by guiding maintenance crews in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, making it an excellent position for someone who enjoys teamwork, problem-solving, and taking initiative.



What to Expect

Work is generally performed Monday–Thursday on four 10-hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non-scheduled callouts. The position requires the ability to report to the duty station within 45 minutes, respond in all weather conditions, and participate in rotational night, standby, and call-back assignments.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations. 
  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Remove deceased animals and debris from roadways. 
  • Track, document, and report daily work activities. 
  • Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform snow and ice control; load trucks from stockpiles or pits;
  • Haul materials such as sand, gravel and other items. 
  • Maintain stockpile sites.
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations; as well as full road or bridge closures.
  • Perform traffic control.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Technical & Operational Expertise: Ability to apply knowledge and skills in highway and maintenance operations, including traffic control, vehicle operation, snow and ice ops, and equipment handling, ensuring safe and effective completion of tasks. 
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Effectively communicate with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, to provide clear information and support collaboration. 
  • Customer Service Excellence: Provide responsive, courteous, and professional service to internal and external customers, resolving issues and maintaining positive relationships. 
  • Independent Work & Prioritization: Manage workload independently, efficiently prioritizing multiple assignments to meet deadlines and operational needs. 
  • Technology & Data Management: Proficiently use Windows-based computers and software to complete documentation, reporting, and operational tasks accurately and efficiently.

  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


The following qualifications are also required

  • Class B CDL with N endorsement without restrictions. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtained within six months of employment. 
  • Obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification within six months of employment.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more. 
  • Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water. 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Safety Awareness & Safe Work Practices: Demonstrated ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and practices while performing maintenance activities. Ability to identify hazards, use appropriate safety precautions, and consistently contribute to a safe work environment. 
  • Work Planning, Organization & Prioritization: Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize daily assignments, manage competing priorities, and complete tasks efficiently while meeting operational needs and deadlines. 
  • Foundational Knowledge & Skill Development: Demonstrated ability to apply basic knowledge and skills acquired through education, training, or hands-on experience to successfully perform assigned duties and support highway maintenance operations.


Important Notes

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and often near moving traffic and heavy equipment, requiring heightened situational awareness and strict adherence to safety practices. The role involves physically demanding tasks, including deploying traffic control devices, flagging, and operating maintenance vehicles and equipment, with extended periods of standing and walking. Employees must wear appropriate PPE at all times. 
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
